BONSALL – While San Luis Rey Downs Enterprises closed its golf course on Aug. 6, it hasnít quelled the spirit of community members who have formed a group known as Save the Downs.

According to Jon Frandell, a fundraising golf tournament and dinner, held July 26 at Pala Mesa Resort, helps "provide financial resources for the group known as Save the Downs to obtain legal advice, expert research, and advertising to keep the golf course known as San Luis Rey Downs from becoming a mitigation bank."

"The fundraiser golf tournament and dinner was a huge success," said Frandell. "Jerry Tomaz, who is on the Save the Downs committee, said that there was an additional 130 people in the community that paid for the dinner and auction to support saving the San Luis Advertisement

Rey Downs golf course."

"Over 80 golfers had a wonderful day competing in a putting contest and playing 18 holes of golf," added Frandell.

The banquet following the golf tournament including a silent auction, large raffle, and live auction, which were beautifully orchestrated by emcee Rod Walz and auctioneer Julie Edwards.

"Total receipts for the event surpassed $34,000; net receipts were in excess of $22,000," said Frandell.

Save our Downs contends that if the San Luis Rey Downs golf course is turned into an environmental mitigation bank it "would cease all community, social and recreational use of the golf course."

Frandell said the fundraising event was successful due to a large number of dedicated volunteers. Major sponsors included Lilac Hills Ranch, the Walz Group, Rod and Jeri Walz, Tom and Barbara Crail, and Deb Howard.
