An 81-year-old Palm Desert man died and his 81-year-old wife was critically injured after he tried to make a u-turn on Old Highway 395 in Fallbrook and his sedan was struck by a pickup truck, according to the California Highway Patrol and broadcast news sources.

The crash was reported at 2:57 p.m. near Pala Mesa Drive, according to a CHP dispatcher.

The two were in a red Hyundai Azera driving north on Old Highway 395 when the man decided to make a u-turn onto the southbound side of the highway and was struck on the driver's side by a green Toyota Tacoma that came up

behind them, according to NBC7 and ABC8 in San Diego.

The pickup truck driver, identified as Fallbrook resident Makoto Kubota, 64, reportedly told the CHP he tried to swerve to his left but was unable to keep from crashing into the driver's side of the Hyundai.

The man was transported to a hospital where he died from his injuries, according to broadcast sources. The woman was transported to a hospital in critical condition and Kubota was taken to a hospital after he complained of chest and knee pain.

The CHP is continuing to investigate the incident.

Pala Mesa Drive and Old Highway 395 are nowhere near Oceanside.

Old 395 is not in Oceanside. The accident is in Fallbrook.

VILLAGE NEWS - Please excuse the error - our weekend news reporter misinterpreted the information - the CHP always lists it as Oceanside reporting district, which has to be translated into the proper unincorporated community. Our apologies. D. Ramsey

I passed this maybe 2 or 3 minutes after it happened, before the Firetruck and Ambulance arrived. Both cars ended up in the ditch on the west side of 395. There where a number of people at the cars assisting the scene. Some looked like they came right off the golf-coarse to help. I've scene a number of accidents in my life, but this was by far the worst looking set of wreckage I've scene.
