FALLBROOK – Middle school and high school families are often shocked when they get closer to the college years and see what one year of college costs. For example, the cost of tuition, fees, books, room, and board – for one year – for a freshman living on campus at San Diego State University is over $26,000. Likewise, a year at University of San Diego is over $54,000. To make matters worse, some colleges are now averaging over six years for a bachelor degree.

Gone are the days when a couple part time jobs were all that was needed to pay for a degree. Its important that a family understands the sometimes Byzantine way the college funding process works, and how to avoid overextending themselves with college debt.

With many misconceptions about how to fund college, there is real danger that a family will pay thousands of dollars more than necessary for a college degree. By planning ahead and knowing how the system works, its possible to pay far less than the "sticker price" that a college quotes.

On Wednesday, May 14, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., College Planning SD will present a free college planning workshop in the community room at Fallbrook Library, 124 S. Mission Rd. The workshop will cover how to reduce the out-of-pocket cost for a college degree, how college selection affects costs, surprising facts about private vs. public colleges, financial aid sources, and how to improve financial aid qualification.

This free workshop will outline for families the basic structure of the college financial world. Real world examples of costs of various schools will be covered in detail.

Additional workshop dates are scheduled for families that cannot make the May 14 event. To reserve a seat, or for more information, call Ken Finster at (760) 602-8586 or email
