UPDATE: Sheriff's investigators say sexual assault victim has changed her story, it wasn't a stranger attack

Sheriff's investigators have released a statement this morning, Tues., May 6 that the woman who reported she had been attacked and sexually assaulted on April 23 in the vicinity of Lake Shore Park (in the Lake Rancho Viejo housing development) in Fallbrook, has recounted her story and admitted it was not a stranger attack.

The woman, who said she was jogging with two-year-old child in a stroller, was attacked by an unknown male with a knife who had jumped out from behind bushes on the trail and assaulted her.

According to authorities this morning, "The investigation is still ongoing; however, there have been changes in the victim's account of the incident. The assault did not take place on the trail, the alleged assailant did not jump from behind bushes, and he was not armed with a knife. The victim knew the suspect who resides out of state. This was not a stranger assault."

"While the case is still being actively investigated and the person of interest has been identified, the Sheriff's Sexual Assault Unit is confident in advising the community that the incident previously described did not take place and there is no danger to the community as a result."

Debbie Ramsey

Managing Editor

The San Diego Sheriff's Dept. is asking the public's help in identifying an individual believed responsible for the sexual assault of a Fallbrook resident today (April 23) in the Lake Rancho Viejo housing development on the east side of Interstate 15, just south of State Route 76.

According to authorities, the incident took place "at approximately 8:30 a.m. when a woman was jogging along a path in the vicinity of Lake Shore Park. She had her two-year-old child with her in a stroller. An unidentified male with a knife jumped out from behind some bushes, gained control, and sexually assaulted her. Advertisement

After several minutes, he fled on foot in an unknown direction."

Authorities have described the suspect as male in his mid 30s to 40s with a tan complexion (either Caucasian or Hispanic), dark brown or black closely-cropped hair, neatly trimmed full bear and mustache (beard cut high on neck), between 6-foot 1-inch and 6-foot 2-inches in height with a heavy build described as including a "beer belly."

He was wearing a black, short-sleeved t-shirt with holes in it and black work pants.

Authorities said the investigation into the incident is "just beginning, and more information may be released at a later date."

The Sheriff's Dept. has stated they will be conducting extra patrols in the area.

Anyone with information on the identity and/or location of the suspect is encouraged to call the Sheriff's Dept. at (858) 565-5200 or the Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at (888) 580-8477. Crime Stoppers is offering up to a $1,000 reward to anyone with information that leads to an arrest in this case.

Sheriff's Dept. searching for suspect in sexual assault incident in Lake Rancho Viejo development at Interstate 15 and SR76

Debbie Ramsey

Managing Editor

At shortly after 9:30 a.m. today (Wed., April 23), the Sheriff's Dept.'s communication center confirmed that the ASTREA helicopter is currently conducting an air search over the Lake Rancho Viejo housing area for a suspect relating to a sexual assault that took place earlier in a park in the area.

While residents of the area are reporting that they are having problems understanding what is being broadcast from the helicopter, officials would not provide further information, including a description of the suspect at this time.

The Lake Rancho Viejo area sits on the eastern side of Interstate 15 directly south of State Route 76.

VILLAGE NEWS NOTE: Sorry readers, the Sheriff's Dept. says no one will be available to provide further information on this until late afternoon. D. Ramsey

The helicopter's broadcasts are hard to hear. You can only hear the portion of the message that is happening when the side of the copter with the speaker is pointed at you, and you have to be outside. After several circles, I pieced together:

"Suspect... 6'2", white or hispanic, long black coat, black shirt... carrying (something)... call 911"

Sounds like the helicopter is gone now, so maybe they caught the guy?

There is no Lake Shore Park in the area, other Lake Shores but not Park. Unsure if they meant that it happened in a park. Not good either way.

Do any of the other husbands/fathers around here want to start taking some extra morning jogs around the lake? Say around 8-9am? Will make me late for work, but I can pull that off a few times.

I say GOOD JOB to the victim or whoever provided the description of the perp. It's the last thing on most peoples minds when they are a victim of a sudden, violent crime such as rape to have the presence of mind to make a a mental note of what they are wearing, if they have a beard, hair and eye color, hair style, build/weight, tattoos, ect. GOOD JOB on that! Hope you get better, AND SOON! Also hope the creep gets caught and runs into "Bubba" in jail LOL.

Helicoptor problems are not unusual for the SDSO. On numerous occassions, I called dispatch to advise them thaty the area they were hovering over to make an announcement spoke majority spanish and that all helicoptor deputies should be spanish speakers, fell on deaf ears.

The problems with the SDSO are numerous but lacking basic common sense to have a bilingual deputy in the helicoptor, what the SDSO does not think San Diego County is not little Mexico.

As for the crime, well I did giggle for a minute because it happened in a "hillie" area, poetic justice but reality set in and this is a serious problem. The canyons surrounding have a history of migrant, homeless and recently released criminals, shame you folks don`t know what resides in your canyons and foothills.

Since this area is daddy warbucks, may I suggest if they don`t already have a community patrol to obtain one, visibility will move these folks down the road and the problem is solved.

I can tell you folks where to purchase quality stun guns.... hehe

What does sexually assaulted mean? Is there DNA evidence that could be collected?

****VILLAGE NEWS COMMENTS - The authorities will only tell us "sexually assaulted" - they are the only ones who could answer that question other than the victim. Thank you.

My teen daughter jogs all the time and is coming home from college next week...I have heard there is a serial rapist in Fallbrook...has anyone heard this? There was a town meeting last night the news said.

When you hear the helicopters, whether you can understand them or not, it's good practice to make sure everything is locked up....windows, doors...GARAGE SIDE DOOR.... Even if you can't understand them...you know it's SOME kind of warning.

If you don't see or smell smoke, assume they are on the lookout for someone and lock it down! Be save everybody...

A woman with a two year old child in a stroller was dragged under the bushes and sexually assaulted (raped)

The child was strapped in the stroller which was knocked over but fortunately the child was unharmed although I'm sure terrified.....

Ray the real ones comment shouldn't be allowed for approval. POETIC JUSTICE? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? you don't know her story if she is some rich uppity snob where she came from nothing!. I hate how uncaring our world has become. the nasty comments I see on horrible things that happen make me ill. You should be ashamed of yourself. It doesn't matter if it was a woman living in a poor or rich area she was assaulted in front of a child. I can't imagine what kind of person you are to be able to laugh would if it was your wife, mother, sister or loved one?

We watch out for each other to make our community peaceful. The police came to our home last night as a result of one of our neighbors calling to report some sort of dispute in the area. We were asleep and all was well, but I appreciate them checking anyway. Thanks Neighbor and officers...

I see the SDSO still haven't figured out how helicopter broadcasts work. In 5 years of living in North County, I have yet to understand a thing they're trying to say in their entirety...you cannot fly in a circle and expect people on the ground to understand what you are saying.

I lived in La Jolla for 25 years....and when SDPD flew their units in the neighborhood....you could hear every word. They hovered in ONE direction or flew in ONE direction while giving the message. Then they would do the same in another direction. Then again in a third direction.

Common sense SDSO..

Find something productive to do with your life, and keep your controversy-loving words and thoughts to yourself. Making light of a violent crime to a young mother in front of her child? Despicable. Go Away!

The meaning behind the words you say ARE what I'm seeing Ray. We all know that you grew up on the mean streets of Chicago, and we also understand that you have, quite possible through your own fault, not prospered very well. Why else would you be so resentful of those whom you perceive to be above your status in life (hillies) and those supposedly below your status in life (Hispanics and other minorities) yes Rancho Viejo is a fairly nice housing area, but it certainly isn't Beverly Hills! Most of the people who live there are trying to make a living, just like the rest of us. Your absolute lack of compassion for anyone is a gigantic flashing neon sign about the darkness of your heart. If you can't find it in your heart to feel sorry for the young woman (because you view her as a yuppy) at least show some concern for a 2 year old child who will quite possible never forget what he/she saw that morning.

Come on people lets all grow up ok. This lady has gone through enough already have some compassion and stop talking about this is some joke. Because if it was your mom, sister, grandma or daughter for that matter you wouldnt be joking around. Choose your words nicely and respect people period. If you have never been in a situation like this dont judge, this couldve happened to anyone of us. Just image what the victim and her daughter is experiencing right now. Lets all be civil to each other.

Once again, the comments go astray... this thread is now being closed because it is not about Old Stage Road, or who lives in La Jolla, or grew up in Chicago, or what part of town is considered "hilly" or not.
I think we all hope that the authorities catch this suspect soon as this crime is atrocious and makes everyone feel uncomfortable, regardless of where they live in our town. I am so relieved that this woman and her child survived this attack; albeit much healing is ahead of her.
