“Signs” of the problem

Thursday, April 17th, 2014
Issue 16, Volume 18.

The article (Village News, 4/3/14) about the signage struck a nerve. This affects all of the businesses and organizations in town.

We need to take a look at the big picture and not get caught up in the details. Look at the complexity, time, and cost of the process of applying for a permit to hang a sign or banner. Three committees, boards, and bureaucracies are involved in the approval process. There’s talk of forming another committee to fill out the paperwork to satisfy all of these bureaucracies. There are efforts being made to reduce the fees and streamline the process.

Let’s look at the following points:

Why are so many bureaucracies involved? Years ago, I wrote a letter to Bill Horn about this. The response Advertisement

I received, said that allowing banners "would be problematic because the county would not have control over what the banners said." First amendment?

Why do we have to get a permit to publicize what’s going on in the community? This is especially offensive when a permit is even required to put a sign or banner on private property! Private property rights?

The county wants a revenue stream. Why should we have to pay the county for permission to hang a banner or a sign? If we didn’t have so many bureaucrats involved, it wouldn’t cost anything.

Instead of patting ourselves on the back for being the first community in the area to streamline this process, we ought to eliminate it.

Well said. It's both ironic and galling that Bill Horn now has a sign supporting his re-election on East Mission where no other signs are permitted. What are the chances that this sign had to move through these byzantine processes?

i agree!! in some part i can understand how some basic guidelines can keep the town looking uniform and pleasant. Although just like any other so called "governing board" you eventually get members that are only involved for selfish and greedy reasons. pretty much unless your business can please the grand traditions vision, its going to be difficult to get yourself past them. did fallbrook turn into an HOA???

we don't want nobody telling us what to do. we want all the signs to look trashy so we can be like tijuana. tell those people trying to make the town nice that we don't want to know what they think.

I hate Bill Horn a lot more than his signs. I'm with Dr. Dr . on that.

Also vote out Delaney from the Fallbrook Planning Group!

If she is up for re-election Green Hills, and if someone runs against her. If not she is a shoe in, unless she choses to step down, which is unlikely.

Mike and Judy:

We can try to talk about it but as soon as we gwet started, the story postings suddenly get closed. I think the FCPG needs to be disbanded, no more little dictators and small dogs.

I have come to the conclusion there are too many people in this town that have too much time on their hands. Fallbrook is not a fancy art community..move to Santa Barbra or Laguna Hills and take your highbrow attitudes with you.

It's interesting to note that on the so-called Design Review Committee there are no Hispanics. Hmmm
