Woman accused of shooting, killing man at Pechanga Resort charged

Tuesday, February 25th, 2014
Issue 09, Volume 18.

MURRIETA - A Wildomar woman accused of gunning down her boyfriend during a confrontation at the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula was charged today with murder.

Maria Santos Vihnanek, 31, could face life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted of killing 49-year-old Keith Rodman of Los Angeles, who fathered her 6-month-old child.

Along with the murder count, Vihnanek is charged with child endangerment and faces a special circumstance allegation of lying in wait, as well as gun and great bodily injury allegations.

She is being held without bail at the Robert Presley Jail in Riverside.

According to Riverside County sheriff's investigators, deputies arrived on scene and found Rodman in the lobby of the resort in need of medical attention. He was transported to Temecula Valley Hospital where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Additionally, Vihnanek was located in a guest room at the resort suffering from non-life-threatening injuries. She was treated at a hospital and booked into jail.

Further investigation revealed that the shooting occurred in a guest room and that the victim entered the lobby of the casino to seek emergency medical treatment immediately thereafter.

The baby, who was not injured, was placed in the custody of county child protective services.

A possible motive for the shooting was not disclosed.

shooting identified as Los Angeles man

TEMECULA - A Los Angeles man who was shot inside a hotel room at the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula and died was identified today by the Riverside County Coroner's Office as Los Angeles resident Keith Rodman.

Rodman and the suspect, 32-year-old Wildomar resident Maria Vihanek, were in a dating relationship and had a six-month-old baby together, the sheriff's department announced today.

The baby was in the hotel room where Rodman was shot on Friday, but was not injured.

Vihanek will be arrested after being treated for a self-inflicted injury, authorities said.

Rodman was shot an undisclosed number of times and was able to make his way to the giant resort casino's lobby, Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Mike Manning said.

Sheriff's dispatchers received a 911 call at 10:56 p.m. Friday about a bloodied man in the lobby. They also discovered Vihanek in the hotel room where the shooting occurred. Rodman was taken to Temecula Valley Hospital, where he died early Saturday, the Riverside County Coroner's Office reported.

Casino spokeswoman Ciara Green couldn't recall the last time a shooting occurred there.

The casino continued its operations Friday night while sheriff's detectives conducted their investigation in the lobby area and hotel room, Green said.

Wait a minute, "in a dating relationship and a six-month old baby together?" Well there's the first problem.

This story is absolutely amazing.

A girlfriend kills her boyfriend with their own child in the same room. That ought to be a "lovely" memory for the remainder of the child's life. In addition, the child will now grow up fatherless with mommy having pulled the trigger herself. Childhood memories indeed. So when junior shares his/her childhood memories down the road, instead of reciting the usual stories of when he/she first learned how to ride a bike, or say, took his/her first steps, or remembers his/her first day of school, etc., you know, the normal stuff like the rest of us enjoyed, THIS child will have the envious pleasure, no doubt, of being able to claim the fact . . . that he/she was in the same room where daddy was killed. By mommy, no less.

Sweet childhood memories indeed.

Oh yeah, in addition, casino patrons, while sayin', "Hit me", or cheerin' on their slot machine while dressed up for a fun night out, had the added pleasure of seein' some gore and blood to add to the casino experience as a man riddled with bullets stumbled his way into the lobby. Lovely memories indeed.

And last but certainly not least, the show MUST go on, folks. Yes, yes, even the sight of a bleeding man was NOT enough reason to close down the casino for say, at least a few hours, for as we all know that, in a business enterprise, the almighty cash flow MUST continue to, well, flow.

Welcome to insanity.

Folks, remember some 15 or so years ago before the construction of the casinos how the almighty casino propaganda machine told us that casinos do NOT attract crime?

So much for that lie.

Birth Control unless you have a divorce-no option committed MARRIAGE. PERIOD. Adoption is always an option for the unselfish parents who want a better life for their child.

Lee: do you honestly believe that the crime was caused by the casino? The shooting was based on problems in their relationship and not the casino. The volatility of their relationship caused the incident and not the location. Get a clue Lee! Also, the gun was not responsible for the shooting, the woman was responsible.

Lee, I am not a fan of the Indian Casinos, either, but really how much crime have they attracted? We had a similar incident in Fallbrook this past week.

A person is dead from gun shots. What will it take for WE, THE PEOPLE to take action and to demand change about guns? What?

Isn't a dead person enough reason? Or are we so callous to not give a rat's behind?

It sounds like trash came to the casino. I guess that casinos and hotels will now have to beef up their security with metal detectors.

Domestic disputes happen everywhere. It isn't the fault of the casino or the gun, it is the fault of the woman who decided to settle an argument with violence.

Guns don't kill people until stupid, irresponsible, insane people pull the trigger, but I do however agree to a point that casinos are not a good idea, they may or may not attract certain crimes but they certainly seem to have a license to rob delusional people from their money, honestly; how many people must have los all they have on gambling thinking they have a life changing chance? Casinos will always win and the vast majority of people gambling there will lose, period but they certainly know how to lure people in to lose their money. I have to give some credit to Pechanga though for at least showing every day's jackpots which if real; the amounts sometimes show the odds are at least better there than other casinos like Pala or Barona or Viejas who must have the tightest machines anywhere so if I decide to go to a casino, I think I'd try Pechanga but as of now I am not even thinking about it, I work too hard for my money to risk it like that.

If you go to a casino to win, you are in trouble. If you go with, say $100 and look at it as a night of entertainment and expect to send the $100 like you would at a movie, play etc. then it is ok. Don't take more than you can afford, look at it as a night of entertainment, and enjoy yoursevle. I do not go to the Indian Casinos - not my idea of entertainment. (But then a lot of people don't like hiking and camping and shooting).

I'm not a gambler myself, and can count on one hand the number of times I have been in any of the tribal casinos.

I am in favor of Native American casinos because of the revenue it brings in for the tribal people. "We" took their land and put them on reservations, treated them despicably and left them to virtually starve. If they are raking in the dough now, good for them. It is about darn time.

@Mom of Lots: Just being realistic, what would you call a "couple" who bring their 6 month old baby and a gun to a casino? I have all the pity in the world for the poor innocent baby, what kind of life will he or she have? My hope is that there are loving relatives who will step forward. As a Catholic and a Christian I have pity in my heart for everyone, but something like this just makes me sick.

@ #20 Jackie

That's the spirit, Jackie! Let us, people, tell each other to sit down and shut up. It isn't enough if Uncle Sam does it; now people are telling each other to hush up. Bravo, Jackie, bravo! What has #18 secret really said that is so bad? He has told us that a person who was shot multiple times was covered in blood -- surprise, surprise -- and that he received medical treatment -- surprise, surprise. Gee, none of us knew that already, ey?

You have adopted Uncle Sam's cowardly policy of hiding behind the respect of loved ones . . . when he, Uncle Sam, is ashamed to broadcast all the coffins that come home from the Iraq and Afghan wars. And now you, an individual, are telling another American to hush up.

Uncle Sam must have a grin from ear to ear when he reads comments such as yours . . . and when WE, THE PEOPLE tell each other to shut up.

This is a tragic story of a woman wanting to be loved- found a seemingly nice guy - dated....... He got possessive - she decided to break it off...... He continued to try to win her back - made promises- said he'd change- she goes back to him- they get pregnant - she is hesitant to commit to him- he hasn't changed like he had promised- the beautiful baby boy arrives- father gets insanely possessive wont let mom out of his eye site - she makes plans to run- escape -take baby and disappear - she gets scared of what this man will do to her.- she postpones her plans to flea.... Something happens in that hotel room - she is in survival mode - she would never put her son in harms way. She was not in her right mind - she was abused and now she will again suffer at the hands of this man..... Tragic ...... Wish we had helped her leave.....
