SAN DIEGO - A memorial paddle out and beach gathering to celebrate the life of longtime San Diego television journalist Loren Nancarrow will take place at South Cardiff State Beach today.

Nancarrow, 60, died early Saturday evening, surrounded by his family, following an 11-month battle with brain cancer, according to a family statement.

Nancarrow's television career spanned more than 30 years and included stints as a weatherman, anchor and a reporter on KGTV 10News, KFMB CBS8 and, most recently, KSWB Fox 5.

The five-time Emmy winner was also known as a passionate conservationist, co-authoring four organic gardening books.

Nancarrow was diagnosed with stage three terminal brain cancer in February, and later retired from Advertisement

his anchor position at Fox 5. He called himself a "Brain Cancer Warrior" and authored a blog about his cancer journey.

He is survived by his wife, Susie, and children, Graham, 25, Hannah, 24, and Britta, 20. On her father's blog Sunday, Hannah said her father was a human Pinterest board, with expertise in "citrus trees and roses and tomatoes, raising chickens and earthworms and monarch butterflies."

"He was proud to be San Diego's organic son," she wrote.

Today's memorial paddle out and beach gathering is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. at Seaside Reef. Attendees are encouraged to bring a kayak, surfboard, towel or beach chair and a candle to light for Loren.

You couldn't help but smile each time Loren's segment aired during the local news. He was the bright sunshine on a cloudy day. His knowledge on gardening helped me get ride of white fly using harmless ingredients. We will miss him . RIP Loren Nancarrow.

The loss of Loren Nancarrow is felt by many - viewers as well as those of us in other media outlets. I well remember Loren's visits to Fallbrook to cover various newsworthy items. He was not only friendly and affable to community members, but also to other media reps. He was really a delight to be around. RIP, Loren. You will be missed.

San Diego news and weather will not be the same without Loren. He was a true professional and I enjoyed watching him for the last 30 years. May God bless his family.
