Local growers venture into Japanese hoshigaki (dried persimmons)

FALLBROOK – Fallbrook growers Bob and Noriko Tygart of Winterwarm Farms have embarked on a venture – introducing the public to the wonderful flavor of the naturally made Japanese hoshigaki, or dried persimmon.

The Tygarts have committed to the use of no sprays, chemical fertilizers, or preservatives.

"These hoshigaki are grown by us and hand-prepared in the Japanese tradition," explained Noriko Tygart, a native of Japan. "We hand-pick and personally prepare each one. They are very sweet, with Advertisement

soft centers and an almost tea-like flavor as a result of the natural drying process. Once dry, the natural sugar appears as a white coating on the outside. They contain no sulphur, unlike many commercially prepared dried fruits."
