The holidays; a time to reflect and give thanks

The holidays are upon us. This year, Thanksgiving and Hanukkah fell on the same day; Christmas and New Year’s are fast approaching. The strain of holiday shopping at crowded malls, the endless parties, even the worry about what to serve guests or what gift to give a particularly persnickety relative often obscure the underlying message of the holiday season.

Today, most of us celebrate the holidays in warm, safe homes surrounded by family and friends, confident that we are secure and our liberties are inviolate.

Our God-given freedoms, first recognized in the Declaration of Independence which declares: "...that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights...," are enshrined in the Constitution and protected by first-responders at home and by our far-flung military abroad. For well over two hundred years, they have stood the test of time.

During this holiday season, we should remember the blessings bestowed upon us as human beings. Whatever our beliefs, it is obvious that faith, hope and love should be the underlying reasons we celebrate the holidays. We should also give thanks for our families, our homes, our liberties and those willing to put their lives on the line to protect us all.

My family and I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and prosperous New Year.

By Calif. State Assemblymember Marie Waldron (R-75th District)
