Mr. Campbell is annoyed by the noise made by the helicopters that fly to and from Camp Pendleton throughout the day and late at night. Mr. Campbell seems to have more than a passing knowledge about the Base and I’m sure that the commander of the base is rigorously studying the details of Mr. Campbell’s suggestions on military logistics and warfare training and discussing their merits with his officers.

Not only do helicopters fly over, but munitions are exploded that rattle our windows, shake the ground, and startle our animals and neighbors.

When we bought our house, there was a disclaimer that there would be noise from the base, but we didn’t think too much about it.

But guess what? We love living by the base. Every time there is a window-shaking boom, we think of the young men and women being trained to protect our way of life.

Living with the noise from a Marine base is a small sacrifice compared to the dangers and ultimate sacrifices that we will ask of these Marines on deployment.

When the nighttime rumblings start and flares start dropping, we sometimes sit on our deck and watch the show. Occasionally we can see tracer rounds off in the distance. It’s all about your viewpoint – for us it’s more a matter of comfort than annoyance.

You see Mr. Campbell, Fallbrook is not under attack, America is.

Dennis Newell

I hope Dennis is right and that the Base Commander is all over this issue. It is obvious to me that some people in this town like the helicopters and some don't. May I suggest to the Commander that he have his IT guys build a website where all the residences, that care, can designate their preference of having "flyovers" or "no flyovers" for their home. He publishes the website, everybody votes and the Commander can then map out flight plans going over as few "no flyover" homes as possible. Problem solved. Everybody happy and we can go back to arguing about the important things in town like the McDonald's move.

Dennis Newell, have you given any donations to those marines, army, navy and air force returning veterans from our many foreign wars and the organizations trying to save them from committing suicide at a rate of 22 per day? Since our country doesn't give a d...n, maybe you should pony up and pay some bucks to help these kids out OR quit complaining about those people who have their own lives and work that they need to get to sleep at a decent hour and enjoy some peace and quiet.
