Members of Fallbrook High Schoolís Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter raised and showed steers which took three of the four FFA color-level champion or reserve champion honors at the 2013 San Diego County Fair.

Mitchell White raised and showed a shorthorn which was the FFA All Other Colors (non-black) champion. Will Scarbrough had a red Maine cross which won reserve champion honors for All Other Colors. Taryn Sehnert took Black Steer reserve champion honors with a Maine cross.

All three steers were 15 months old when they were judged at the fair. White raised Ruger, who was acquired from the Colburn Cattle Company in Visalia and weighed 1,338 pounds on the fair scales.

"I was very surprised," White said. "I was very happy to see how he turned out."

The 17-year-old White completed 11th grade at Fallbrook High School last month. The 2012-13 year was his third in FFA. He raised two pigs as a freshman and raised a pig and a steer for last yearís fair. This year he had two lambs and a pig as well as Ruger.

The Mullen family and Scott Breer teamed to purchase Ruger at $3.25 per pound.

Scarbrough raised and showed Wesson, who weighed 1,407 pounds. "Just excited and glad that he turned out the way he did," Scarbrough said.

Scarbrough, a 2013 Fallbrook High School graduate, spent four years in FFA. This year was his first with a steer at the county fair; he entered pigs during his first three years in FFA.

Wesson was sold to Tip Top Meats for $3 per pound.

Sehnertís steer was Colton T, whose breeder was J. Corbett of Bloomington. Colton T was 1,279 pounds when the fair weighed the steers.

"It was an honor I wanted real bad," Sehnert said. "Itís really nice to have all my hard work being paid off."

Sehnert, who is now 15, completed ninth grade at Fallbrook High School last month. In addition to her FFA experience, she has also been in 4-H for five years.

Colton T brought $3.75 per pound when purchased by the Daghlian and Traut families.
