Boomer retirees discovering Fallbrook and Bonsall

Thursday, May 9th, 2013
Issue 19, Volume 17.

FALLBROOK – The Bonsall/Fallbrook region has always been a magnet for retirees, but the new surge of retiring Baby Boomers has only increased that trend.

Orange County transplant Stacey Bonomi said, "We wanted to move to a quieter place after we retired and we looked at a number of places across the western United States. We looked at some beautiful places like Durango (Colorado) and Prescott (Arizona), places that had a slower kind of lifestyle, a country lifestyle, but when we looked at the rural lifestyle and weather here, and the access to major urban centers, we just couldn’t pass on settling in Fallbrook."

The Boomers are coming to Bonsall and Fallbrook and the local housing market is benefiting from the trend, at least that’s how some area real estate agents see it, according to local RE/MAX agent Marla Cruickshank. "We are seeing a very noticeable bump in interest from the newest Baby Boomer retirees," said Cruickshank.

"The biggest factor is that, in Southern California, we are unique," added Cruickshank. "The Bonsall/Fallbrook region remains one of the few near-coastal areas that has escaped Southern California’s high-density development and this has strong appeal for those seeking a Advertisement

quieter pace of life at an affordable price."

"We were able to own at least three times the property that we could have bought for a similar investment, if we had stayed in Orange County," said Bonomi. "It was an easy decision."

It’s a common refrain and this quickening interest in the local area is considered good news for home sellers who have been particularly hard hit by the housing slowdown of the past five years, Cruickshank said. Local agents have said the increased interest is a sort of mini-bonanza – and it’s one of the driving factors contributing to an increasing number of retiring Baby Boomers coming from Orange County, Los Angeles, San Diego and even nationwide who see Fallbrook offering them, quiet, more space, and great weather.

"We believe there is an ever-increasing premium on what the region offers," said Cruickshank, "and urban growth and increasing density elsewhere make Fallbrook/Bonsall stand out."
