FALLBROOK – The Fallbrook branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), in conjunction with the Fallbrook Union Elementary School District, hosted its annual Math Science Breakfast on April 10. Teachers and counselors from the Fallbrook and Bonsall school districts selected nine eighth grade girls who show promise in math, science, engineering and technology to attend the breakfast: Ashley Arzate, Gabrielle Bachman, Frida Diaz-Barriga, Jocelyn Leach, Gabrielle Martinez, Gina Ready, Antonia Rojas, Natalie Weber, and Olivia Zalevsky,

The featured speaker was Michelle Crodby, MD, PhD., a native of North San Diego County who attended Duke University and went to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston for her medical and graduate training. She did her internship at Harbor-UCLA, completed her residency at Emory University and is currently an assistant clinical professor at UCSD in the Department of Ophthalmology. Dr. Crodby has a practice in Encinitas. She spoke of current practices for correcting and treating eye deficiencies.

Also addressing the girls and their parents were Dr. Carrie Hughes, a microbiologist and senior manager of Quality Control at Genentech, as well as Louise Greeley Rph, DHPh, CNN, a pharmacist and clinical nutritionist. Both emphasized that "choosing a career that you love makes that job a joy and a passion."

AAUW has been supporting and encouraging young women to attain their goals in education and in the workplace through their programs of advocacy of equity for women and girls. For further information regarding AAUW, visit
