SAN DIEGO - A red flag warning was in effect today for the valleys and mountains of San Diego County as dry, windy conditions heightened the risk of wildfire in the region.

The National Weather Service scheduled the red flag warning to expire at 5 p.m., saying that until then, valley and mountain residents could expect areas of sustained northeast winds of 15 to 25 miles per hour gusting up to 45 mph.

"The stronger winds will Advertisement

be mainly in the central and southern San Diego County mountains and adjacent inland valleys, with low relative humidities for much of San Diego County, except near the immediate coast," according to an NWS advisory.

In addition to the red flag warning, a wind advisory will be in effect in valley and mountain areas from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m.

"The winds will make driving difficult, especially for motorists with high profile vehicles," an NWS advisory said.
