Translate this page Firefighter Boot Drive to be held Tuesday, March 12Monday, March 11th, 2013 Issue 11, Volume 17.
Firefighters from North County Fire will be on the street corners at Mission Road and Ammunition Road, Fallbrook St. and Main Ave., and SR-76 and I-15 with their boots during the morning commute. What began more than a decade ago as a grassroots effort backed by the fire service, the Burn Institute’s countywide Boot Drive has become a hallmark fundraiser for the organization, raising nearly $230,000 for Burn Institute programs and services in 2012! Each year, hundreds of uniformed firefighters from fire departments all over San Diego County come together for a common goal, hopping aboard their engines to meet at intersections within their communities to collect donations in their boots during the morning and evening commutes. And each year passing motorists help to fill those boots with their spare change – ones, fives, twenties – even $100 bills. No matter the economy or weather, San Diegans have always given generously. This year, dedicated firefighters from 44 departments will hit the streets at over Advertisement Proceeds benefit Burn Institute fire and burn prevention education programs and burn survivor support programs such as Camp Beyond the Scars for burn-injured children, 5-17 years. Celebrating its 27th season, the Burn Institute’s unique camp program has provided a safe place for many hundreds of young burn survivors to share their experiences in a supportive camp environment. Sponsored by the San Diego–Imperial County Fire Fighters Advisory Council to the Burn Institute and the San Diego County Fire Chiefs’ Association, the Burn Institute’s 14th Annual Firefighter Boot Drive is the organization’s largest one-day fundraiser. All of the funds raised through the Boot Drive will stay in San Diego County. As always, the top fire department from each region will win the Burn Institute’s highly-coveted bronze Boot Drive trophy. The Burn Institute is a local non-profit health agency dedicated to reducing the number of burn injuries and deaths in San Diego and Imperial counties through fire and burn prevention education, burn care research and treatment, and burn survivor support services. Sorry, but California already took my $ 150
The boot money goes to the children's burn care unit "Me". Surely you can turn loose of a $10.00 for that can't you?
The money that the firefighters collect go towards helping burned children at the San Diego Burn Center. NONE of the money goes to any fire department.
Donate to hospitals that already overcharge their patients? No thanks.
The money goes into a fund to help families pay for their children's care. Would you let the children die "Me"? Would you allow them to suffer? Where is your compassion? Thank you Firefighter's.
Why are you thanking the firefighters? They didn't give the money.
Great job firefighters. Please continue your work for a worthy cause. Re; ME, If you need to complain about your $150 weed tax. Write the state. The bill was sponsored by Cal-Fire to supplement their budget cuts. It has nothing to do with any local fire dept. In fact most fire dept opposed it.
@ Me, "Why are you thanking the firefighters? They didn't give the money"... not only do they put their own money in those boots, they stood out there for hours collecting for burn victims. Not a dime of that money goes in their pockets.
"continue your work?" Work? A bunch of over-paid, over-pensioned, firemen put out a boot and citizens throw money into it. I guess that would be considered "work" for a bunch of guys who usually just sit around all day on their butts watching TV or polishing their trucks.
@Erin: Please do not try to confuse "Me" with the facts. He hates all firemen. You know what kind of envy that is don't you? BTW "Me" we are thanking the firefighters because they stood out on the street corners collecting the monies on their own time. I understand that compassion and kindness can not be regulated, only God know our heart.
Wrong Pink......I don't hate all firemen. I respect volunteers tremendously. It's the forever-whining paid firemen who I have a problem with. ![]()
"They stood out on the street corners collecting monies on their own time?" Oh wow. They donated 3 whole hours of their lives. Where should we erect the statue?
It wasn't about the Firefighters "Me", it was about the kids they were helping. If you chose not to contribute a couple of bucks (what is that, one cup of coffee?) to help children who are burn victims then there is nothing more to be said. You made it about yourself and your contempt for, and hatred of, professional firefighters. I don't know what happened to you, perhaps you were frightened by a loud siren from a passing fire engine as a baby, or perhaps you tried to become a firefighter and couldn't pass the test. I don't know what the reasoning is, but you need to let it go. You make yourself look shallow and mean spirited. By the way, none of those firefighters are asking for a statue, they do not even expect a thank you. They are just proud to have done the "right thing". As I said before, compassion and kindness cannot be governed, that comes from within, so does venom and spite.
It sounds as though "Me" was or is a volunteer firefighter!!! |
