Food and camaraderie – a great combination – at the VFW!

Guests and VFW members alike usually have one thing in common; they come to the VFW dinners for the tasty down-home cooking as well as for the camaraderie. Even a building that could be very bleak is welcoming with its red and white checkered table cloths and neat place settings.

Members volunteer to prepare the meals served; and there are several choices on various days – on Mondays, burgers with beans are offered, Wednesdays they serve spaghetti/Italian sausage and Fridays are a potpourri. Please check the website for the specific Friday offerings such as tacos, pork loins, or chicken breasts.

The prices are very reasonable for all the meals – so who can resist? It’s five dollars for Monday and Wednesday’s offerings and only eight for the more elaborate Friday dinners. The website: www.vfw1924.com/calendar/ has hours and other information listed.

Since Wednesdays are reserved for spaghetti and sausage – Louie Molnar decided to spice it up a bit on special occasions and offer ravioli or lasagna along with the other dish. It’s a great combination that he calls "Tour of Italy." Louie has been cooking for the VFW for three years. He enjoys it, but also admits, "It’s a challenge – I Advertisement

have never cooked for this many people before."

The day I visited he had five different pots simmering. One with white alfredo sauce, one with marinara sauce, one with spaghetti and two with different kinds of ravioli. He quickly put it all together – like fitting puzzle pieces – then placed an Italian sausage on the side, and grated fresh parmesan cheese and herbs over the entire plate. A green salad was also offered – that’s a lot of delicious food for five dollars!

The Fallbrook VFW Post 1924 is called the Charles E. Swisher Post after a WWII Navy seaman first class who was killed on the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor. Swisher attended Fallbrook schools and then joined the US Navy on November 7, 1940. He was killed on December 6, 1941.

On March 8 at 6 p.m. the VFW will offer a dinner with "broasted" chicken, coleslaw, potato salad, baked beans and Louie’s famous soup. Come see what makes Louie’s soup famous and along the way you just might win a raffle or a door prize!

The Fallbrook VFW is the best kept secret in town and all their meals are open to the public. There is a nice large dining room, home cooked meals, and there is also a full bar available for those who like a before dinner drink or a glass of wine with their meal. See you Friday!!

I want to thank Rufus, Louie, and the VFW as a whole...

Not only great food, but a great place for current and retired military, to gather, swap stories, add something special to your community, while thanking those that went before us, and those that are now, serving for us..
