Was this a Marine Corps training exersice? The article implyes it was; unusal that this was done at a civilian Airport and Iam guessing civilian gear.
Yes it was a Marine Corps training exercise. It's not unusual for the Marines to train at perris. Many foreign military train there as well. They were using military rigs.
There is a Caleb Medley who was a survivor (although seriously injured) of the Aurora, CO theatre shootings; seems unlikely but the name is unique -- this isn't the same guy, is it? Both from CO?
Marine Recon units use civilian drop zones regularly as they can get more jumps and better training value for the dollar. Perris Valley has facilities set up for this type of training with all SpecOps units.
In response to Curious, no this is not the same Caleb Medley. I am from Burlington, the same town as this young marine. He will be sorely missed by his parents, his sister & 3 brothers. He was an upstanding young man. Our community mourns with his family.
This was a wonderful young man from Burlington, Colorado. He was loved by his community, family, and friends for helping keep us safe and serving his country. He comes from a wonderful, loving family who will miss him dearly. Anyone from Burlington who knew this fine Marine is heart broken.
Thanks Marine and 0451 for straightening me out.
No it is not the same Caleb Medley, there is at least 3 years difference in their ages. RIP warrior, fw&fs.
I had the honor of serving with Caleb on his first tour in 06'. He was undoubtably one of the best. You'll be missed brother RIP.
Sad day. RIP and prayers go out to his family and friends.

God's speed Devil Dog. As our hymn states, "If the Army and Navy ever look on Heavens scenes, they will find the streets are guarded by United States Marines" Our Recon community lost a great Marine.
RIP All soldiers go to heaven!
Its sad because he was our neighbor in Burlington and we watched him ship off. He also would spend the night with my older brother, who is currently in the military.
SEMPER FI MARINE. GOD BLESS YOUR FAMIL YNOW AND FOREVER. HELPED HIS MOTHER THROUGH BOOT CAMP. VERY PROUD OF ALL OUR MARINES.
Its interesting to read about this. I was originally an 0451 turned 0321. It is and it isn't unusual to have an exercise as such on a civilian airport. Especially when March AFB is next door. Perris on the other hand has had one of the worst safety records of SD/FF jumps since the 90s. Many instructors I knew since then on longer live. Either way its a sad day within 1stRB. Rest in Peace Brother Recon.
He was an amazing young man. He was a true role model. He died doing what he loved and what he believed in. I was blessed to have known him and watch him grow up into the fine Marine that he was. He had a smile like no other and he will be truly missed by all that knew him. His services are tentatively set for Wednesday March 6th in Burlington
Caleb was a good brother and friend, he would make us laugh all the time and that any time with him was comical. He will always live in our hearts and we will miss Brother Recon. Love you BROTHER!!! NEVER ABOVE YOU, NEVER BELOW YOU, ALWAYS BESIDE YOU!!!
