BONSALL – The sixth graders at Sullivan Middle School had their annual China Banquet on Friday, Feb. 8. For the past five weeks, their social studies teachers, Terry Breckenridge, Jennifer Gaetani, and Jenn Johnston have been leading them through the China unit as their "empresses."

In each core class, the students were divided into five groups known as the Zhou, Tang, Han, Sung, and Ming dynasties. They worked together to compete with other dynasties for the "Mandate of Heaven" which in ancient Chinese culture was the belief that the rulers had the divine approval of the gods. obtain the "Mandate of Heaven," the students needed to have the most civil service points.

They earned these points by learning the value of teamwork by practicing good civil conduct with others, completing class work in a timely manner, and through working diligently on group projects, etc. All students attended the banquet and enjoyed delicious Chinese food, thanks to the many sixth grade families who donated food and paper goods for the event.

The winners of the "Mandate of Heaven" were rewarded by sitting at the Emperor’s table and being served by their teachers and principal.

Project based learning at its finest - THANKS Sullivan teachers & administration for making learning fun and memorable. :) (And YAY for Prop BB passing so that these kids can continue studying together in an academy style learning environment for 6 more years - aka Bonsall High!)

The students that earned the "Mandate of Heaven" tables, were served by their teachers and Principal - they can EAT! What a fun learning event and ALL of the students were so courteous and polite throughout the day. It was a pleasure to be a "lowly servant"!
