Bonsall Union School District unification plan to be addressed by County Supervisors at Feb. 26 meeting

Tuesday, February 19th, 2013
Issue 08, Volume 17.

SAN DIEGO - Plans for the creation of a unified school district in the North County community of Bonsall are scheduled to be considered by the San Diego County Board of Supervisors at its Feb. 26 meeting, according to documents posted online today, Feb. 19.

The new Bonsall Unified School District would add high school classes to the existing Bonsall Union School District. The concept was approved by the area's voters last November, but the supervisors are required to sign off on the plan.

The current school district serves around 2,100 K-8 students. The change would result in the phase-in of high school grades, beginning with the ninth grade in Advertisement

fall 2014.

The 500 high school level students would be housed at Sullivan Middle School on W. Lilac Road. Secondary school pupils in Bonsall currently attend Fallbrook High School.

If the supervisors give their approval, the county superintendent of schools plans to appoint interim members of a governing board for the new district. They would meet for the first time next month.

The county documents said the interim trustees would be tasked with selecting officers, determining a meeting schedule, naming the new district, hiring a superintendent, adopting policies, approving a curriculum and renegotiating employee contracts. Teachers and staff of the old district would be automatically hired by the new district.

Need to get the "where" and "what time" on this meeting! All interested citizens, and anyone with questions or concerns about these plans should attend. Interesting & good to know that staff of the old district will automatically be hired by the new district....didn't know that was going to happen.

The meeting will be held at the County Administration Center, 1600 Pacific Highway on the western outskirts of Downtown San Diego (just northeast of the San Diego Maritime Museum). The meeting has a 9:00 a.m. starting time, although other business may be conducted prior to the Bonsall school district item.
