Translate this page Deputies out in force searching for suspected drunken driversSunday, February 3rd, 2013 Issue 05, Volume 17.
"As one of America's most anticipated and celebrated sporting events, the Super Bowl brings together families, friends and fans each year to enjoy the excitement of the big game," according to a San Diego County Sheriff's Department statement. "In many instances, fans will gather to watch the game at a sports bar, restaurants or Super Bowl-themed parties. We want everyone to make the right decision on Super Bowl Sunday." Sheriff's deputies planned to patrol in search of drunken drivers. Chula Vista police planned a checkpoint in an undisclosed location, set to begin at 4:30 p.m. and extend until 11:30 p.m., police Officer Margarita Walker said. Officers will contact drivers to check for signs of alcohol or drug impairment, and when possible, specially trained officers will be available to evaluate those suspected of drugged driving, she Advertisement "Over the course of the past three years, DUI collisions have claimed eight lives and resulted in 84 injury crashes harming 262 of our friends and neighbors," Walker said. Walker said the deterrent effect of checkpoints was a proven resource in reducing the number of people killed or injured in alcohol- or drug-related crashes. Sheriff's officials said those who attended Super Bowl parties or were watching the game at sports bars or restaurants should designate sober drivers or take a taxi, avoid drinking too much too fast and stop others from driving under the influence. Party hosts were advised to ensure guests use sober drivers, stop serving alcohol at the end of the third quarter and keep the numbers of cab companies handy. Sheriff's officials said party hosts can be held liable of someone they provided alcohol to was involved in a drunken driving crash. And if the drunk is underage, parents can be held financially liable. 3 comments
