FALLBROOK - On February 21 and 22, Fallbrook Union High School (FUHS) will host Safe School Ambassador® training for approximately 50 students and 10 to 12 adults. Safe School Ambassadors is a program that trains diverse and socially influential student leaders to intervene with their friends and classmates when they see teasing, bullying, racism, and other acts of cruelty or insensitivity.

This is the first time FUHS has launched a school-wide anti-bullying program with an implementation plan for sustainability after the initial training.

As the program trainers' say, "Students see, hear, and know what adults don’t. They can intervene in ways adults can’t, but usually they don’t. They often fear retaliation or simply don’t know what to do."

The Safe School Ambassador program removes these obstacles by very carefully identifying and selecting Advertisement

[ Metalography ] socially influential "opinion leaders" from the diverse cliques and groups at school. They are trained in non-violent intervention and communication skills to use among their peer group to prevent and stop cruelty.

"Students can’t learn and achieve well in an environment where they are teased, left out, and sometimes bullied," said Adam Dawson, assistant principal, FUHS. "We see the program as a valuable resource in our efforts to improve school climate, attendance and academic performance."

The training will be funded by San Diego JPA. Anyone interested in participating as a mentor, an informational meeting for parents, community members and staff will be held February 7 at 3 p.m. in Room 201 at Fallbrook High School.
