Marquis Sumpter was named to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference first team for football and was also named as a third team NCAA Division II All-American.

Sumpter, who graduated from Fallbrook High School in 2009, was a senior at Western New Mexico University during the 2012 football season.

The All-American teams were announced Dec. 4. "I was speechless," Sumpter said. "I wasn’t expecting it."

Sumpter ranked ninth among all NCAA Division II players in receiving yards and 22nd in receptions per game while sharing 11th place among Division II players in receiving touchdowns.

"It was an honor, and I was just so blessed to be in that position," Sumpter said.

During the 2012 season, Sumpter caught 74 passes for 1,180 yards and 13 touchdowns.

"He was a dominant player and deserves the recognition," said Western New Mexico head coach Adam Clark.

The all-conference honor was the second consecutive one for Sumpter. "It was a good honor. Two seasons in a row, that’s pretty hard to do," Sumpter said. "It feels good to be recognized for my good effort."

Sumpter’s 13 receiving touchdowns led all RMAC players for 2012 as did his 107.3 receiving yards per game. His 74 receptions ranked fourth in the RMAC while his 15.9 yards per catch ranked second. He exceeded 100 receiving yards four times with his best performance in that category being 176 yards Oct. 13 in Gunnison, Colo., against Western State. He twice caught 11 passes in a game during 2012: on Sept. 29 in Golden against Colorado School of Mines and on Nov. 3 at home against Black Hills State.

"He had a great year. He was a big part of the offense," Clark said.

Sumpter was one of six WNMU players to earn all-conference honors in 2012 and one of two named to the first team. The Mustangs’ other first-team player was cornerback Bernard Williams.

In 2011, Sumpter was one of five Mustangs to earn all-conference recognition and the only one named to the first team; as a junior he led the RMAC with 11 receiving touchdowns while ranking second with 769 receiving yards, third with 63 receptions, and third with 69.9 receiving yards per game.

Sumpter concluded his collegiate career with 170 receptions, 2,458 receiving yards, and 29 touchdowns.

The Mustangs finished their 2012 season with a 4-7 record and were 3-6 in RMAC play.

Sumpter is majoring in kinesiology at WNMU and is scheduled to graduate in May.
