The family of Martin Campos was greatly humbled by the outpouring of support shown to them in the aftermath of the 15-year-old athlete’s death. The generosity of the donations made at a fundraising car wash event held January 10 fully covered the boy’s funeral costs and greatly touched them, they said.

"It was an amazing day," said Campos’ aunt, Maggie Torres. "There are not enough words that can express how thankful we are. With an open heart, we want to express our gratitude to our family, friends, and members of the Fallbrook community. Fallbrook has a great community, and we are proud to be part of it. May the Lord bless everyone who donated."

Campos was discovered unresponsive and not breathing at a friend’s house on Old Stage Road in the evening of January 5. Emergency responders said CPR efforts on the boy were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at 8:13 p.m.

While the official cause of death has not yet been released by the San Diego County Medical Examiner, friends of the family said his death appears to have been caused by an overdose of medication.

Lenore McDowell, an investigator with the County Medical Examiner’s office said the final determination of his cause of death is "pending, until the toxicology report comes back," which can Advertisement

take several weeks.

Campos, who attended Fallbrook Union High School, was a voracious athlete who was popular with his peers and coaches. He was involved with basketball, rugby and football.

"Martin loved sports with a great passion," said Torres. "He was a kid with a good heart; with dreams and goals." He was also involved in two local church youth groups.

Campos, the son of Blanca and Louie Campos, was also raised by his aunt and uncle, Estela and Robert Perez, and had a large, extended family.

Despite their pain and grief, family members said they wanted to let their fellow community members know how appreciative they are.

"We just want to express our gratitude to everyone for their help and support, with special thanks to Steve from Berry-Bell & Hall Fallbrook Mortuary, the staff at St. Peter’s Church, the staff at Fallbrook High School, the Fallbrook Village News, and youth pastor Banning Cantarini at Sonrise Christian Fellowship," said Torres.

"Our hearts are in sorrow for Martin’s departure to Heaven," said Torres. "We must believe, per our Faith, that God will encounter Martin with open arms. He will live in our hearts forever and each experience with him will be a treasure in our lives."

A funeral mass for Campos was held Monday, Jan. 14.
