CAMP PENDLETON - A wrong-way driver's car crashed into three other vehicles on Interstate 5 on Camp Pendleton today, snarling southbound traffic into San Diego County.

Traffic backed up past the San Onofre checkpoint following the head-on crash, which blocked three lanes of the southbound freeway, according to the CHP.

The woman was spotted driving a small sedan at a high speed in the center median north in the southbound lanes between Basilone and Las Pulgas roads about 12:20 p.m., the CHP reported.

Today's four-vehicle collision involved a green Toyota Sienna minivan, a silver Toyota Camry, a Advertisement

blue Toyota Highlander and another undescribed vehicle. Wreckage blocked the three left lanes and a SigAlert was issued at 12:28 p.m., as traffic squeezed by in the one remaining lane.

An ambulance was required, according to the CHP, but it was unclear how many people were injured in the crash.

Three tow trucks were called to remove the wrecked vehicles, according to the CHP.

A fence and guardrail separate the freeway lanes in that area, where head-on collisions involving motorists trying to avoid the northbound Border Patrol checkpoint by using southbound lanes have occurred in past years.

Seriously? I do not know an area along there where its possible to get from the Northbound 5 lanes to the Southbound 5 freeway still trying to go Northbound. If there is an opening then WE are pretty stupid for allowing it to BE THERE just for this reason that many innocent people could get seriously injured and KILLED!

What do we have an opening there for? Just to see how many we can catching trying to cut past the check point? As they leave a slew of bodies behind them?
I love our Border Patrol, they do a great job with the few resources they have, IN THE supposedly richest country in the world right. They are commended for the drugs and illegals they catch daily, but a hole in the fence is ridiculous.
Fix it, and go on with regular flow of traffic wthout taking lives.

There is no 'hole' in the fence. She most likely drove the wrong way up the off ramp to get onto the freeway going the wrong way. This isn't the first time this has happened in that area...
