SAN DIEGO - Temperatures that could fall below freezing, and plant- damaging frost were expected again tonight in parts of San Diego County, forecasters said.

Freeze warnings were in effect for the valleys and deserts and a frost advisory was in effect in coastal areas that were scheduled to extend until 8 a.m. Sunday, the National Weather Service reported.

"Many areas will experience frost and freezing temperatures again tonight. Sensitive plants may be damaged or killed," according to the NWS. "Downtown San Diego and other urban areas will likely remain above freezing due to the urban heat island."

Areas of frost and below freezing temperatures were expected west of the mountains and in the lower deserts each night and morning through Tuesday, but forecasters said tonight into Sunday morning would likely be the coldest and a hard freeze could be possible in some areas.

Lows were forecast between 21 and 31 degrees in the valleys. NWS forecasters expected more than 11 hours of below freezing temperatures were expected tonight with up to nine hours of temperatures below 28 degrees in wind- sheltered valley locations.

"Increasing offshore winds will limit the extent of the below freezing temperatures to the wind-sheltered areas," according to the NWS advisory.

Temperatures of between 25 and 32 degrees were expected in the Anza- Borrego Desert, including areas and communities around Shelter Valley and Borrego Springs.

[ Pala Mesa Resort ] areas will see frost overnight and in the early morning hours for the next several days. Lows were forecast between 25 to 35 degrees coastal areas.

Downtown San Diego could expect lows in the mid- to upper 30s, the NWS said.

Frost and very cold nights along with gusty wind are forecast through Tuesday. Areas of frost along the coast could also be possible with temperatures that fall at or just below freezing, forecasters said.

The weather should warm up Wednesday, according to the NWS.

Lows are forecast in the 20s in the valleys and lower deserts and the 30s in the coastal areas.

Additionally, a high surf advisory and coastal flood advisory are in effect. In the outer coastal waters, northwest winds of 20 to 25 knots and rough seas around 10 feet will make conditions hazardous for small craft.

Very cold nights are also forecast through Tuesday, with lows in the 20s in the wind-sheltered valleys and lower deserts and widespread frost likely.

A hard freeze is likely in those areas most susceptible to the cold, according to the NWS.
