The Fallbrook Associated Swim Team placed 12th among the 31 teams which competed at the San Diego-Imperial Winter Age Group Championships meet December 21-23 in Coronado.

"Very happy," said FAST coach Sean Redmond. "I was pretty excited with how well they swam."

FAST had 15 swimmers at the meet including 16-year-old Bobby Guerra, who won his age group’s 100-yard freestyle finals. Guerra qualified for the championship finals or consolation finals in all nine of his events.

"In the two meets, he’s probably dropped at least a total of two minutes in time in all of his events," Redmond said.

Guerra’s previous meet was the 2012 Speedo Winter Junior National Championships in Knoxville, Tennessee, December 6-8. "We didn’t rest for the Coronado meet like we did at juniors," Redmond said.

Redmond explained that the lack of workload tapering was a matter of preparing for subsequent situations where a qualifying trials might take place shortly before the competition itself. "I think it was a really good experience and a good opportunity for us to see what it would be like," Redmond said.

Guerra still had personal best times in six of his nine events at the Coronado meet. He won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 47.96 seconds. He also had the fastest 50-yard freestyle time in the preliminaries before settling for a second-place result of 22.15 seconds in the championship race. Guerra’s times of 1:43.15 in the 200-yard freestyle, 4:36.91 in the 500-yard freestyle, 9:33.86 in the 1,000-yard freestyle, and 1:57.07 in the 200-yard backstroke also earned second place in each of those events. Guerra’s time of 1:57.90 placed third in the 200-yard individual medley, and he finished fifth in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:58.00. The 200-yard breaststroke was the only event in which Guerra had a lane in the consolation finals rather than the championship finals; his time of 2:21.87 gave him 13th place.

Guerra was one of nine FAST swimmers to place in the top 16 in at least one preliminary heat to earn a lane in the championship or consolation finals. Ten-year-old Cameron Batty was third in the 200-yard freestyle, 13th in the 100-yard breaststroke, and 14th in the 100-yard individual medley. Fourteen-year-old Emma Thomas placed third in the 200-yard butterfly, eighth in the 100-yard butterfly, ninth in the 100-yard freestyle, 14th in the 50-yard freestyle, and 14th in the 200-yard freestyle.

Eleven-year-old Kent Woodsum finished fifth in the 200-yard butterfly, eighth in the 400-yard individual medley, and 12th in the 100-yard butterfly. Twelve-year-old Walker Clark was seventh in the 200-yard butterfly and eighth in the 100-yard butterfly.

Eleven-year-old Anna Draves finished 12th in the 100-yard breaststroke. Twelve-year-old Anthony Vazzana placed 14th in the 200-yard freestyle. Twelve-year-old Aria Firooz was 15th in the 50-yard breaststroke. Nine-year-old Ivan Tournier finished 16th in the 100-yard freestyle.

"It’s definitely going to be a good motivator for them," Redmond said. "I think they’re fired up."

FAST’s next competition will take place January 12 in Temecula.
