People exposed to tuberculosis at Vista High School

Thursday, December 6th, 2012
Issue 49, Volume 16.

SAN DIEGO - Public health officials planned today to notify people at school campuses at both ends of San Diego County that they may have been exposed to tuberculosis.

The county Heath and Human Services Agency says people may have been exposed by unidentified carriers at Vista High School and San Ysidro Middle School.

The period of exposure at Vista High School was between Aug. 20 and Oct. 30, according to the HHSA. At San Ysidro Middle School, exposure might have occurred between July 31 and Nov. 28.

Free testing will take place at San Ysidro Middle School on Dec. 10 and at Vista High School eight days later.

persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "TB usually requires many hours of close, indoor contact to spread to others, so most people who are exposed in classrooms do not get infected or develop the disease."

The illness is treatable with medication, she said. Her deputy, Dr. Eric McDonald, said there are usually more tuberculosis cases in San Diego County each year than most other places around the country, though the local infection rate has been declining recently.

HHSA officials said 213 cases of TB have been reported in the region so far this year compared to 263 for all of 2011.

T.B. was erradicated in this country years ago. Unfortunately this is not the case in many third world countries. Carriers of this disease are welcome in this country by those who espose open borders.

It also comes home with those in our military serving oversees and anyone else who travels to these countries, but given the locations I'd put money on illegal immigrants.

It's not bashing, it's pure facts.

Ask any public health official or look the information up yourself at the CDC.

Too bad the facts aren't to your liking, but that doesn't change them.

To "cough cough," military members are routinely given TB screenings.

"TB usually requires many hours of close, indoor contact to spread to others, so most people who are exposed in classrooms do not get infected or develop the disease." Am I missing something here? School IS many hours of close, indoor contact with others for days on end every week.

It is foolish to say that a statement of fact is bashing. TB is coming in over our open borders. Are we supposed to suppress the truth in order to be politically correct?

Amazing how many people get testy when some quote the truth. Illegal aliens from Mexico and Latin America do bring in diseases long ended in this country only to come back in force. Maybe the rule of law and strict control of our borders would prevent this but the democratic party needs it's voting base. Every study out there says this but still people get their cards out. I know we live in a time where we re elect liars (Obozo) but there is only one truth, accept it.
