Translate this page Silvey steps down as Warriors’ head football coachWednesday, November 21st, 2012 Issue 47, Volume 16.
Silvey announced his resignation five days after a Fallbrook loss which concluded the Warriors’ season with a 1-9 record. "The results weren’t very satisfactory," Silvey said. "There are times when if you’re not happy with the results you’ve got to look at what you can do about it." Silvey posted an 11-42-1 record during his five years as Fallbrook’s head coach, including a 2-2 figure in CIF playoff matches. "We are losing a highly qualified head coach," said Fallbrook athletic director Patrick Walker. Walker noted that Silvey’s first year included San Diego Chargers high school coach of the week honors along with a playoff victory before a second-round loss. "In the playoffs he led us within inches of going to the semifinals. He literally turned this program around in one year. Yes, it has been a struggle over the past couple of years, but Joe had the integrity to realize it just wasn’t working out and decided it was time to hand it over to someone else," Walker said. Under Fallbrook Union High School District policy district staff will have the first opportunity to be considered for the coaching position. If no suitable applicants are obtained from within the school district the position will be opened to other aspirants. "At this point we are looking for the best fit and we’re offering it in-house and just want the best coach for our football program," Walker said. "We are determined to turn this thing around and will settle for nothing less than the best fit for the student-athletes in the football program." Silvey, who is an English teacher as well as a coach, will remain on Fallbrook High School’s faculty. "We hope that Joe will stay on as part of the football staff. Winning five CIF championships as a D-coordinator is a pretty good indicator of his qualifications and the respect he has throughout the North County and Orange Advertisement Silvey began his coaching career as the defensive coordinator of Santa Margarita Catholic High School and helped the Eagles to CIF Southern Section championships in 1996 and 1997. He was the defensive coordinator at Carlsbad High School for eight years including the Lancers’ 2002, 2005, and 2006 teams which won CIF championships and Carlsbad’s 2000 squad which lost to Fallbrook in the CIF championship game. Silvey grew up in Mission Viejo and attended Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, where he was a linebacker on the football team and also played soccer and was on the track and field team. He was an English major at Princeton University and spent one season on the Tigers’ football team. The Warriors finished 0-10 in 2006 and 2-8 in 2007 under coach Patrick Schmidt. In 2008 Fallbrook had a 4-6 regular-season record, including a 2-3 mark in Avocado League competition. The Warriors earned a first-round playoff match at Mira Mesa and defeated the Marauders in a 21-17 game. Fallbrook then lost to second-seeded Escondido by a 14-12 score in the semifinals. "We certainly the first year did some exciting things," Silvey said. The 2009 Warriors had a 2-8 record in the regular season but received a berth in the CIF playoffs. Fallbrook opened the post-season with a win over Rancho Bernardo before losing to Vista in the quarterfinals. Fallbrook had a 1-8-1 record in 2010 and finished 2011 with a 1-9 mark. Three of Silvey’s former players are now on rosters of NCAA Division I schools: Zach Brickell plays for Nevada, Jeremiah Kolone is at San Jose State, and Taylor Perry is with Tulane. Current senior Sean Dowling is expected to sign with UCLA on February 6, the first day this year’s seniors can sign college letters of intent for football. "I’ve had the opportunity to meet a lot of great people at Fallbrook," Silvey said. "I know that they’ll support the new coach and continue to support their team." 13 comments
Thank God! I pray that the administration takes this football program in a new, winning direction! A direction with a coach which the students and players can be proud of and respect. A coach who the players respect and can look back on their playing days fondly and say that the coach made football fun! .
I think the athletic director, Pat Walker, should resign as well. The baseball and football programs are in shambles. Fallbrook has so much talent and it is obvious that he doesn't have the skill to run these programs.
Clean house and put Gregg Madden in as Head Coach. No one is more well-respected than he is. The boys trust him and that says it all.
We will miss you Mr.Silvey! You are my favorite English teacher I have ever had! Thank you :)
Thank goodness, now we may have a winning team. Fallbrook has talented Boys, They just lacked leadership. We need to have a local Coach who can motivate the Younger boys as well. Silvey never seemed to care.
In house they should hire the best thats why Fallbrook can no longer compete with others schools. We need to hire coaches that have sports knowledge not just doing it for the pay and to coach there kids. We have not had a winning season since Blankinship left. They should rehire all new help including Walker,King and we might just have more kids staying in sports instead of quiting and moving to better sports districts.
Coach Silvey is a good teacher with a good football mind, Pat Walker shows no leadership to drive FUHS coaches. The only drive our community has is to drive to other schools or programs. FUHS coach hiring is getting a name as a buddy system. Look at the baseball program that is falling apart as we speak, kids are leaving, boosters are leaving....... oh wait...... Walker is also a baseball coach!!!!!
None of the kids ever felt motivated with Silvey. We need a coach who wants to win and help are kids go further on. They need to let Walker go and King. Why is it our Rugby Team can win every year, and these are the same boys who play football. It's called leadership starting at the top.
I am amazed, after all of these years, to be reading headlines that could have come from 2006, 2007, etc. How is it possible for FHS Football to still have these issues? As many have already said, the only answer to this question is: lack of leadership. And it starts at the top indeed. We went through the Schmidt debacle with our son, which was completely mishandled by Rod King. And now Pat Walker is in the loop?? I can't think of anyone less able to handle the entire sports program than Mr. Walker. I'm sure Coach Silvey is a good guy, but I can only speak for the problem as it happened to us many years ago: the Administration doesn't know how to support its sports programs. I shake my head in disbelief to read that this problem is still haunting FHS.
I'm going to beat my drum again regarding the teachers union that runs FHS. If the administration had the clout to deal with each teacher as it saw fit, the caliber of teacher in FHS would improve through those kept on the basis of merit. The athletic program is no different from the education program which is run by the enforced mediocrity of the teachers union. Dump the union and empower the administration to make the decisions it should make and the education of our kids would improve as well as athletics.
Man I hated playing for this guy , practice was dreadful every single day . Hopefully things start turning around
FBplayer - curious, what made practices dreadful? Other in the program or close to the program, or have watched the Warriors: Silvey had a good track record as a Def. Coordinator. Why has that not translated as a good record as an HC? Is it that he just doesn't have what it takes as an HC? Or does Fallbrook just not have the "football" kids right now? ![]()
What will change with Williams at the helm? He's been the Coordinator for a defense that has lost a LOT ever since he has been there. I hope things change, but interesting hire in my opinion. I've watched a lot of Warrior football over the years. Can't say I've been impressed with the defense. |
