FALLBROOK – The first couples and singles Mahjong tournament hosted by the Fallbrook Senior Center was a solid success, organizers said.

The Sept. 14 tournament, which was open to all players, attracted 64 participants and raised nearly $1,100 for the nonprofit center that serves area seniors.

"Everybody was very happy," said Araxy Moosa, a center board member who also organized and publicized the event. "It was very successful. We hope to do it annually."

Beverly Glavas of Fallbrook pocketed the top prize of the day, $50, which was awarded to the player with the highest score. She amassed 18,400 points to win the day. Two gifts – one for the highest score and one for the lowest – were awarded to each of the 16 tables of players.

Moosa also applauded a pair of center officials, as well as a tournament player, for helping make the event a success. Center executive director Virginia Cooke prepared a buffet lunch for the competitors and Phyllis Sweeney, a center director, helped oversee the raffle. Robin Parker interrupted her tournament play to assist with the sale of raffle tickets.
