Fallbrook High School’s girls tennis team opened its Avocado West League season Sept. 20 with an 11-7 win over Vista at the Fallbrook Tennis Club.

"Vista is always a tough competitor, and we’re really excited to play them," said Fallbrook coach Dave Ramirez. "It was pretty good. Everyone did play well. Our #1 doubles team didn’t do well, but everyone else did great."

Although the #1 doubles team of Hailey Tucker and Rebecca Dupont lost all three sets against the Panthers, the Warriors won eight of the nine singles sets. Fallbrook’s #1 singles player, senior Monica Robinson, left immediately after the match for a recruiting trip to Pepperdine University. Ramirez had given Robinson the option of playing or leaving for Pepperdine earlier, and Robinson chose to compete. "She was very supportive," Ramirez said. "That was really cool of her to do that."

Robinson won one set by a 6-0 score while prevailing by 6-1 margins in her two other sets.

Skyler Schaar was Fallbrook’s #2 singles player. She won two 6-3 sets, including one in which she trailed Vista’s #2 player 3-0 before winning the next six games, and prevailed by a 6-0 margin in her other set. "It was a pretty good match for Skyler," Ramirez said.

Nataliya Yamkova won two of her three sets as the Warriors’ #3 singles player, losing 6-4 in her only defeat while winning by 6-3 and 6-4 scores.

Tucker and Dupont were the only Warriors not to win a set. "It was pretty good that my 2 and 3 doubles stepped it up," Ramirez said.

Rachel Riesenberg and Joellen Banks comprised Fallbrook’s #2 doubles team and won two of their three sets, losing only to Vista’s #1 duo. Fallbrook’s #3 doubles team, Tori Sullivan and Maddie Young, won one of their three sets against the Panthers.

The win evened Fallbrook’s overall season record at 3-3.
