FALLBROOK – Members of Fallbrook’s AAUW (American Association of University Women) and Fallbrook High’s AVID (Advancement via Individual Achievement) program recently enjoyed a special day building a scarecrow to participate in Fallbrook’s upcoming Scarecrow Days that will be held in the community in the month of October.

The group of AVID students included seven new Fallbrook High sophomores – Cindy Acosta, Jasmine Ortiz, Carina Perez, Emilee Person, Griselda Raymundo, Sarai Rojas, and Stephanie Sanchez; and 11 returning juniors and seniors – Monserrat Aguilar, Berenice Almaguer, Sinhai Dorantes, Daysy Espinoza, Alexis Lopez, Nuri Melo, Anna Ordonez, Yessica Perez, Briana Person, Michaela Rodriguez, and Karla Ruiz.

This year’s AVID mentors are Barbara Ajello, Chris Assad, Karen Langer Baker, Judy Barnett, Kathy Bierbrauer, Karen Boman, Martha Duran, Karen Estes, Kat Gardner, Eileen Hider, Terri Keyes, Barbara Luther, Cathy Monroe, Susan Ortler, Diane Reeder, Rosie Scheller, Rosemary West, and Maria Wolownick

Scarecrow Days founder Jackie Heyneman at the Fallbrook School of the Arts where they learned how to make a scarecrow. AAUW mentor Chris Assad developed the idea for the group’s scarecrow – a six-foot tall female astronaut – as a way to exemplify women’s capabilities in all professions. Some of the students painted a large sign that says, "AVID Women CAN!" Others completed the body, which included an extra terrestrial being and an oxygen tank on her back. The astronaut/scarecrow’s head will remain a mystery until she appears Oct. 1 in front of Denny’s Restaurant, at the corner of Main Avenue and Fallbrook Street.

Scarecrow Days in October now has over 75 merchants, groups and individuals participating in building scarecrows that will be displayed in front of downtown businesses during the entire month.
