FALLBROOK – The North County Fire Protection District (NCFPD) recently placed into service a new fire engine. The purchase was made possible, in part, with grant funds acquired through the Indian Gaming Special Distribution Fund (SDF).

The SDF, which originated when the tribal compacts were signed in 1999 by then-Governor Gray Davis, is designed to assist local governments handle off-reservation impacts of tribal gaming by permitting cities and counties to apply for grants funded by tribal contributions to the state SDF.

Locally, the SDF is funded by the Barona Advertisement

Band of Mission Indians and the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation. Administration and grant allocations are made by the Indian Gaming Local Community Benefit Committee.

The economy has put significant strain on NCFPD’s budget and this grant award allows the continuance of the fleet replacement plan which was otherwise in jeopardy. The new engine services Interstate 15 and Highway 76, both of which serve as arteries to multiple casinos. The state-of-the-art fire engine is equipped with auto extrication equipment and over-the-side rescue capabilities; it stands ready to serve.
