Angel Society awards $15,000 in scholarships

FALLBROOK – Five Fallbrook Union High School graduates were recently each awarded a $3,000 scholarship by the Angel Society of Fallbrook. The 2012 awardees are Margaret Harriman, Kristie Ashby, Miguel Lopez, Roselia Mendez, and Leslie Romero.

Scholarships were based on personal essays on why they chose their particular course of study, and how they plan to give back to their community; grade point average; school-related extracurricular activities; letters of recommendation, and financial need.

Margaret Harriman – an exceptional student (GPA: 4.39) earned membership in the Principal’s Meritorious Honor Roll and California Scholarship Federation. She volunteered over 140 hours of community service and mentored incoming freshmen. Margaret will be attending Stanford University majoring in microbiology/neuroscience.

Kristie Ashby – excelled scholastically (GPA: 4.21) and, musically gifted, played various instruments in marching, concert, and jazz bands. Kristie also volunteered at Fallbrook Food Pantry, worked with her grandmother on a local political cause, and tutored students. Kristie took first place in the Rotary 4-way speech contest in 2010 with the topic of healthcare, her academic field of interest. Kristie will be attending UCLA, majoring in biology with pre-medical intent.

Lopez – a native of Fallbrook and an exceptional student (GPA: 4.04) is an Advanced Placement and Honors English student, as well as a member of AVID. Miguel has given over 200 hours of community service all during his high school years and was honored last fall as Community Student of the Month. Miguel will be attending UC Santa Barbara majoring in economics and accounting.

Roselia Mendez – (GPA of 3.98), was an Advanced Placement, Honors English and outstanding AVID student, who she has earned the respect of her peers and teachers alike. Community service included volunteering with the Fallbrook A Leer (a program to help improve reading in children), and the GANAS Mentoring program. Roselia will be attending UC Santa Barbara, majoring in accounting and cconomics.

Leslie Romero – (GPA: 3.67) balanced a full college preparatory course with a busy extra-curricular schedule. She has earned many awards including Young Eagles EAA Certificate, National FFA Greenhand Degree, and Rotary Youth Leadership Award. She will be attending UC Riverside majoring in international business.

The Angel Society of Fallbrook congratulated its scholarship awardees and wished them success in their educational endeavors.
