The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has reported that a fatal rollover accident that occurred early this morning (Dec. 20) involved a 25-year-old Marine.

The white male adult of Oceanside was driving his 1998 Chevy Camaro eastbound Gopher Canyon Rd west of Dentro De Lomas Rd at a high rate of speed, said Chris Parent, public information officer for the CHP.

"The driver lost control of the vehicle after leaving a curve in the roadway," said Parent. "The Camaro began to spin across the westbound lane and off the north side of the roadway where the driver side of the vehicle collided with a tree."

Parent said the driver sustained fatal injuries as Advertisement

a result of the collision.

"DUI is not suspected at this time," said Parent.

The accident caused a minor traffic delay as westbound Gopher Canyon Rd was shut down for approximately one hour.

Although several of the crashes...this one included.....ARE due to speeding.......The majority of the crashes on Gopher Canyon are a result of FOLLOWING TOO CLOSELY.

There are numerous intersections without turning lanes and you take your life in your hands just stopping to turn left.....Disney, Margale Lane, Little Gopher Canyon Road.....

I use Gopher Canyon daily and can see the roadway from my home as well, and it amazes me how close people drive behind the vehicles in front of them....leaving them no room for error.

On a GOOD note, they finally put a flashing yellow light with warning sign eastbound at Little Gopher Canyon Road.........but the BAD news is they put the darn sign too close to the intersection to be of any good. By the time you see it....it would be too late if a vehicle is turning left onto LGCR. It should be moved about 75 feet west of its current location.

I saw the body on the side of the road covered in a yellow tarp, I saw his feet sticking out from the tarp. All I could think of was his family. I craid the rest of the way into work, called both of my children and told them how much I loved them and to please drive safe. I drive this road Monday thru Friday I'm thinking of taking the 78 from now on.....My thought prayers go out to his family.

THATS A Good point ME,,,,I Never stated that people follow to closely,,,its the same thing,,,as speeding,,its called agressive driving,,,it seems now a days 65 to 70 percent do it if they are behind someone who is going the posted speed limit,,,,I guess I am missing something,,it seems as if a speed limit tells you 35 that has to mean 55,,or if its 15 that means 35,,when it says 50 that means drive as fast as you can,,,Are we really an intelligent society?,,,we are not we are just high tech hi IQ,,Hi education,,but like a bunch of robots,,,,again people are to self centered to slow down unless they are forced,,,,when you see the Big Vehicle with the big tires,,watch out and get out of the way,,you could get run over,,,there are very few accidents

Why oh why are there no signs along this road, at least in the mroning and afternoon rush hours, that flash "slow traffic ahead" or "proceed with caution in turns"!! Now that everyone who used to take the 76 is taking Gopher as an alternate route to work, Gopher is a veritable death trap. People come barreling down the hill in the morning at 60 - 70 mph around the turns acting as if there is no one ahead of them and then slamming on the breaks when they finally see cars! I am sick of seeing the skid marks and car parts on the side of the road. I too saw the yellow draped body this morning and it made me ill. The car didn't even look like a car any more. This road is deadly. Barrage your local officials with this directive before more people die!

I hear ya Frustrated Commuter.

In 35 years of driving, I've never seen so many skid marks and car parts on such a small section of roadway.

That is absolutely right. I have driven this every day for 15 years and have barely escaped being rear-ended many times, only by being very defensive -- covering the brake and dropping back approaching LGCR. I sent a letter to the highway dept a few years back asking for a warning sign. Not only is this new sign too close --- when you see the sign you can already see brake lights; therefore it's too late -- it might actually distract someone from seeing the brake lights ahead! Definitely needs to be moved farther up the road.

My Son and I saw this deceased Warrior this morning on my way to work. He was not covered yet and it really bothered me all day. I didn't know if there were family in the vehicle or what. I travel this road every day and most of the points already made are very true. What's worse is that often times, I see cyclists on this road. Not good...

Prayers to your family.

I also saw the accident and the body laying there with a yellow tarp over him. The image stayed with me all day as well. So sad for this to happen, especially right before Christmas.
I send a prayer to the family.

Same here, it made me cherish my family even more. Unfortunately, sad any time it happens but especially so during the holidays. This Marine probably returned from overseas safe only to have a tradgety at home. Being a former Active duty Marine, I could only imagine the emotional impact. He is in my prayers.

I worked with this young for he left to join the Army. Not the marines. He was a great person with the best sense of humor. He was also an only child. I am positive that his friend or his family want to read about the horrific details. A little respect im sure would be appreciated.

I am a family member and pray that his parents DO NOT read some of these comments. They have all they can handle right now and unless you have something to say or do to help them be quiet. They have just lost their only child, a beautiful son who was everything to them. His whole family is saddened and heartbroken by this loss.

To the family member,
My dad worked with him and we are all very sad to see him gone. We were so proud to see him transition into the great man he was, and we will never forget him. Seeing him every few months was always the highlight of my year, I loved his comic relationship with my dad and brother. When my dad first saw him in uniform, he came home with tears in his eyes, I always thought of him as my non-related older brother.
I could write so much more about him, but I can feel the tears welling up.
We're going to miss you tons, rest in peace.

I am a very close family member that has had a close call myself, and people should have more respect when a tragedy has happened such as this people should just mind thier own business and leave the comments to themselves. In all likelyhood a family member is going to read your comments, and myself I would like to slap a few of the comment makers.

This is a very bad time and at the holidays, How would some of you feel if you lost your only son, or your only nephew how the heck would you feel. I would guess pretty bad.

As my mother use to tell me and my siblings growing up "If you have nothing nice to say do not say anything at all". And show the parents the respect that the so rightly deserve!!!!!!!!!

I have a good thought If you do not like Gopher Canyon then pay for the signs and put them up yourselves or change the driving laws or do not drive on it.

And as for my brother and his lovely wife we love you and are here for you and for my great nephew "I LOVE YOU AND I KNOW YOUR WATCHING ME AND LAUGHING AT ME, AND YOU HAVE MY HEART AND WE WILL SEE EACH OTHER AGAIN" COUNT ON IT BUDDY".
