Pastor pleads not guilty to sex with preteen girl

Issue 44, Volume 15.

MURRIETA (Wire Service) - A former Marine and founder of an Oceanside church, who is accused of having a two-year sexual relationship with a preteen Murrieta girl, pleaded not guilty today to statutory rape and other felony charges.

Matthias Anderson, 41, of Hemet is charged with 25 counts of lewd acts on a child, seven counts of unlawful sexual intercourse and one count each of sexual penetration with a foreign object and oral copulation of a minor.

Anderson appeared before Riverside County Superior Court Judge Angel Bermudez, who set a bail review hearing for Nov. 15. The defendant, who was arrested last Tuesday, is in custody in lieu of $1 million bail at the

Southwest Detention Center in Murrieta.

According to Murrieta police, the victim and her mother are members of New Wine Ministries Church, which Anderson started in 2002 while stationed at Camp Pendleton. He has since retired from the Marine Corps and now ministers

full-time, according to Murrieta police Sgt. Phil Gomez.

The girl and her mother, whose names were withheld, came forward recently with allegations that the pastor had been molesting the youngster since 2009, the sergeant said.

"The sexual relationship ... occurred multiple times in both Riverside and San Diego counties," Gomez alleged.

Anderson would pick the girl up at her house on Walsh Center Drive and take her to another location, Gomez said. When the defendant showed up to retrieve the girl last Tuesday, Murrieta police officers were waiting to arrest

him, according to Gomez.

"Based on the investigation, detectives believe there is a possibility of additional victims in the Oceanside area," he said.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Murrieta Police Department at (951) 696-3615.

Pastor arrested for alleged sex acts with preteen girl

SAN DIEGO - A one-time Marine who founded an Oceanside church was behind bars today on suspicion of having a two-year sexual relationship with a preteen Riverside County girl.

Matthias Anderson, 41, was arrested at the alleged victim's Murrieta home Tuesday morning and booked on suspicion of unlawful sex with a minor and lewd acts with a child under 14.

The girl and her mother are members of New Wine Ministries Church, which Anderson started in 2002 while stationed at Camp Pendleton, according to Murrieta police Sgt. Phil Gomez. Anderson has since retired from the military and become a full-time minister, the sergeant said.

Anderson was being held in lieu of $1 million bail at Southwest Detention Center in Murrieta.

I give my sympathies to the family but I must admit, I feel it is partially the parents' fault this (may have) happened. If it were my daughter, I would not let her go off with a pastor alone for any reason. There just aren't any good reasons for it. The only reason I could think of a pastor coming to my home to pick up my child would be for a large church group outing or christian summer camp. In which, parents are most often required to drop the child off at the church where everyone is required to meet to be able to go, not the paster or a church authority member to pick them up from home. I hope for the girl's sake that they are wrong accusations and it is not something she will have to live with for the rest of her life.

i feel like this is not right because hello why the heck would they wait two years, and if you knew the pastor you would know, he would NEVER do something like that its just so sad.

Everyone should follow the Scout Youth Protection rule of 2 deep. It protects the adults and it protects the youth.Always have 2 adults 21 years or older at all gatherings. If females youth are present then a trained female adult must be one of the 2 adults.
All youth groups, scoccer and the B balls should embrace this logic.

They left this out..."Detectives say Anderson had a sexual relationship with the girl for two years. They say he met the girl when she and her mother were staying at the church's women's shelter.

The girl's mother told police in October 2010 that she suspected Anderson and her 14-year-old daughter were having a sexual relationship, but the girl would not cooperate with the investigation at that time."

no name, you ask a good question that deserves a good answer. Here's mine.
You wait two years (or longer) because you need to put guys like this AWAY! If you don't have the "ammo" to put the guy away you can't pull the trigger.
So, unfortunately, young kids have to pay, but if you haven't been to the courts lately, this guy would have gotten away with just a slap on the wrist. Even if it had been his 3rd or 4th violation, it wouldn't matter. Someone has to go all the way agianst him. And that is what happened here. I don't know this case, but I know how the system works. And I believe (without any proof) that is what happened here.
Whatever it takes, within the law, is what it takes. You may not like our system, but right now it is our system. So you make the moves based on that.

Unfortunately, people held in high regard do violate the trust of others. It does not matter what they do for a living. This girl has denied and covered it up for two years.

How does one blame the mother for being a new Christian and excited about the Lord helping her family. ( I myself would never let any man pick up my child alone and text, email, or take her places but unfortunately some parents are to trusting) that's like taking them and dropping them off at a Halloween party while I sit in my car. I pray this is not true. I pray this is all a huge joke. But sadly a million dollar bail has me thinking otherwise.
I've been the victim and this hurts so bad hearing alligations especially when you know this family and how hard they work for the lord. I also pray no one else new about this in the church. These church secrets is what stops people in their tracks from fully going to God. If anyone else was aware of this and allowed him to continue to preach without advising the members of a pedophile should also be prosicuted to the full extent.

Instead of praying for the andersons pray for the little girl who he had sex with and robbed her youth and innocence beginning when she was 12, pray for her family and the hurt that runs so deep, yes obviously they have proof with the million dollar bail, I pray matthias anderson faces a harsh judgement from his god. It may not seem like him but it is him, as well as his wife who I believe knew what was going on for 2 years and continued to allow her husband to molest a little girl, she should be prosecuted as well, as well as all the elders and other supposed bishops who knew and did nothing, may they all be prosecuted and face their gods judgement, I hope their lives crumble.

when a little 12 year old girl is robbed of her virginity by a man who is brainwashing her and telling her he loves her.......of course this little girl is gonna wait to tell........because she thinks she has a "boyfriend" who loves her i mean afterall hes leaving his wife of 20 years daily to be with her......would you as a grown adult have the nerve to set someone up, catch em with the cops, i think not. I respect and admire this little girl for coming forward and having the guts to take him down.

Emily- wake up and smell the coffee. You have apparently fallen for the persona he wanted you to see. She was a child/minor. He is an adult and a person who holds a position of trust and was supposed to be helping her family at a time when they needed it the most. Like most pedophiles he used his position to get what he wanted. They are nothing but Wolves in Sheeps clothing. It's up to all of us to not be fooled. These perps walk among all of us every day and because we refuse to open our eyes and be vigilant in noticing behavior that is odd or just a little out of the ordinary they continue to victimize our children.

Lucy, thank you for your excellent analysis: "yes obviously they have proof with the million dollar bail".

I'm excited to be made aware of this new change in our criminal justice system, that the bail amount now determines the innocence or guilt of the accused. Thankfully, we can now dispense with a trial, saving the state substantial time and resources.

At 12 you also ( I am female and I knew ) better then having a SEXUAL relationship with ANYONE. Yes he is ( is this is true ) at fault 110% but her mother knowing this was going on over a year ago should have stepped up to the plate then and handled this like a mom. This could have avoided any other issues regarding other children coming in his path..................

Emily, I agree with you. I know someone else who was falsy accused of sexual abuse on a minor. The girl was caught in so many lies the case was dropped, but not before the guy's life and reputation were ruined. Don't rush to condem someone until all the facts are in.
Unfortunately, this man's life is ruined no matter what the outcome is now.

IF you do your research you will find that bails on sexual offenders are not set this high they are usually around 100,000 dollars, a million dollars is unheard of unless the have substanstial proof, and he is considered a predator and threat to our communities. DO YOUR RESEARCH before you think you know what youre talking about.

Lucy,

Research has nothing to do with it, so get off your high horse. I am sure you are familiar with the phase "innocent until proven guilty". The bail amount does not determine one's innocence or guilt. Regardless of how bad it may look, the man is lawfully entitled to a fair trial, so we shouldn't presume guilt. If he is guilty, he should fry.

To whomever this Lucywhoo is??...you talk like you know facts but you don't. Here is what you dont know. The only reason the bail is at 1 million is because the detectives went to the judge and retained an arrest warrant. They told the Judge that the suspect will leave the country if bail was not raised. The amount is not based on evidence or facts. I know youre mad and that's fine but please state facts.

personally knowing the child and mother, there is more to the story, the mother came a long way. she not only a victim of domestic violence but she was struggling with a drug problem as well. during her recovery she became a better mother and overall person attending school full time and working at the church and was the a leader in the woman's home giving inspiration to girls who had similar lives to hers. no one would suspect a man who was the founder and pastor of the church and woman's home and the man who basically held out his hand to help back up would be the one to go and have a relationship with her daughter. true enough as mothers you have to be cautious of who your children are going off with but he was a PASTOR, the daughter who was actively involved in the churches youth functions {the choir, fundraisers, and car washes)and she was also the best friend of the Pastors daughter. so how could she be suspicious of any foul play? It's good that she paid enough attention to catch it when she did. Not many people are going to believe an ex-druggy over a Pastor and a man who was so well respected. So think about that and try to get all the facts before you go blaming anyone especially the mother who is still managing to maintain sobriety in light of all of the bull shes dealing with right now. To the mother: Keep being that strong woman that you found apparently on your own good faith at heart.

I knew this guy while I served in the Corps. I used to work for him. He was a strange character then, so this doesnt surprise me. Whats even worse is that he is a former Drill Instructor, and I am wondering if he molested any recruits.
