Issue 33, Volume 14.

SAN DIEGO - Relatives and friends of a highly-decorated 22-year-old Camp Pendleton-based Marine are in mourning following his combat death in Afghanistan.

Cpl. Christopher J. Boyd died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2010 in Helmand Province after an improvised explosive device exploded while he was on foot patrol, according to the Department of Defense.

He was a member of the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force.

A 2006 graduate of Palatine High School in Palatine, Ill., Boyd was the second Camp Pendleton marine from suburban Chicago to die in combat this week.

Lance Cpl. Kevin E. Oratowski of Wheaton, Ill., died in Helmand Province on Wednesday, according to the Department of Defense.

Boyd is survived by his parents, his wife and twin boys, according to The Advertisement

After joining the Marine Corps in 2006, Boyd won a Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, Humanitarian Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal, according to The Daily Herald.

Boyd played for the football, wrestling and lacrosse teams at Palatine High School, The Daily Herald reported. His football coach, Tyler Donnelly, told the newspaper that Boyd was a role model.

"For years his name has been passed down in our program," Donnelly said. "We talk about him all the time. I really can't think of a better kid to give an example of what we're trying to get across: selflessness, sacrifice and hard work.

Since early June, Camp Pendleton has lost more than a dozen men to the nearly 9-year-old war in Afghanistan.

I really wish you would publish a picture of these soldiers when they are killed in action. We see so many of them around town, recognize them, but have no idea what their names are. It surely would help.

He was an incredible man. I've known him for around 10 years now and just saw him last summer with his wife and twins. He lead such a beautiful life and had more courage than I could ever stomach. I miss him so much...RIP CJ.

HI. I had the chance to be one of the fellow Marines that carried Cpl Boyd off the plane, it is a real honor to get to do this for them. I pray for the family and everyone who knew him. Simper Fidelis

I never had the honor of meeting CJ, but both CJ & his wife went to HS with my daughter. He was a brave and heroic man who gave the ultimate sacrifice for his country. I hope and pray that his wife and children take comfort in knowing that this country will be forever grateful. God Bless all our Military Men & Women

Our thoughts and prayers our with CJ's family. He sure did accomplish a lot in 4 years with the Marines. My prayers are that God will bring peace and healing in the lives of CJ's parents, wife and twins. They will see CJ in Heaven again someday... for he is a hero that they will always be proud of.

I knew CJ from his loving Mother and Father. They beamed when they spoke of him and his family. I have never known such people whose grace shown through more than they exhibited during their son's Memorial Service. They raised a fine son who's dedication to his country and fellow marines will never be forgotten. Semper Fi
