Translate this page Whooping cough cases stand at 384, vaccination clinic to be held at Northgate MarketWednesday, August 18th, 2010 Issue 33, Volume 14.
A half-dozen new cases of whooping cough, also called pertussis, were reported this week, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency. The latest cases were in children ages 7 to 17, according to the HHSA. In an effort to combat the epidemic, the HHSA will hold vaccination clinics on weekends through Sept. 26 at a half-dozen Northgate Market locations around the county and at the San Ysidro Port of Entry. The vaccination clinics will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays at the San Ysidro Port of Entry. Clinics will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Advertisement "We are continuing our efforts to vaccinate San Diego County residents, put health care professionals on watch and educate the public," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "We are holding vaccination clinics at Northgate Markets and San Ysidro because of the need to reach our Latino residents," she said. "All eight deaths from pertussis in California have been Latino infants." One of those fatalities occurred in San Diego County. A month-old boy, who had been diagnosed with whooping cough, died at Rady Children's Hospital last month. Pertussis often starts with a cough and runny nose for one to two weeks, followed by weeks to months of rapid coughing fits that sometimes ends with a whooping sound. The disease is treated with antibiotics. 24 comments
Northgate market..... whoop there it is!
Very specific disease, only attacks people who frequent Latino markets or live in San Ysidro. Just another problem caused by illegal immigration, diseases. When I was growing up, I got a few shots before each school year and that was all that was required. Today diseases we had defeated like Polio are making a strong comeback. Illegal immmigration bypasses our normal health checks and balances by the thousands every day bringing all sorts of diseases this country never needed to defend against or defeated decades ago. People always use that tired old line "they come here for a better life" or "who will pick your veggies" but illegal immigration is harmful in so many ways from the economy, public safety and now public health. That is why countries have immigration laws, to prevent these types of problems and to allow their nation to catch up and assimilate the new immigrants into their new country, today this procedure is bypassed and look where we are today, think about it while getting your children vaccinated this school year. ![]()
How many posters here currently hold a United States Passport? How many posters have traveled overseas? How many immunizations did you have to take to either go to the country or when returning home after a long stay? We quarantine animals for diseases who arrive from overseas but we can't control who crosses over our borders for diseases? Irronic isn't it. Whooping Cough and TB are just a few examples of what happens when your border is not secure. Remember last year, the "Mexican Flu" before it was renamed for political correctness to H1N1 which most likely came to this country via the border by a "hopper". I never had to be tested for TB until I moved to California in 1984 and applied for certain jobs, today a TB test is common, why? I checked around and found that our last epidemic of whooping cough last took place in the mid 1950's. TB cases have been on the rise since the early 1980's. MRSA is a disease which like AIDS has no cure and can infect your body in numerous ways, this is also on the rise, my mother has it in her lungs, thanks FH. But if you research these diseases, you will find that the number of cases rises in conjunction to mass immigration influxes like today. Remember not every country has the level of medical care we enjoy, just south of us, the majority of people rarely see a physician or dentist because medical care is non-existant so these diseases fester and when "they come here for a better life" so does their diseases causing innocent adults and children to die needlessly. ![]()
Another little health problem nobody talks about. Ever had to spend time in a county detention facility? Well unfortuniately I did last year, four weeks later, I received letters from the SDSO and HHS regarding that the block I was housed was found to have been infected with TB, why? Well during your intake, you do see a over worked county nurse or LVN (90 day wonder) who checks your blood pressure and the other basics but does not test or even ask if you have had any diseases like TB or WC so your housed with people possibly infected with these diseases and when you get out, you pass them along to your family members or to the general public. Now the county paid for my test which was negative but even our county lacks the willl political or otherwise to protect it's citizens. What is our county motto? Noblist duty is the public good or something to the effect.
TB for two and a side order of whooping cough to go, please! Those of you that employ these people or support local businesses that you suspect employs them, ARE the problem. Become a part of the solution and vote with your dollars every single day. If we wait for our faux representatives to fund enforcement of our already existing immigration laws, nothing will happen. Our money and subsequent spending habits hold more collective power than any of our current laws do.
Ray..your ignorance is showing. All babies born(yes..ALL) are given the pertusis vaccine..as were YOU given the same innoculations when you were around 4 or 5 as years ago it was mandatory for everyone to be given them before entering school. They dont last forever..(let me guess..you thought they did?).new parents are given them..and all others are asked to get them if you are around babies(yes,Ray,some of us LOVE being parents and grandparents).and NO we dont hang out in"latino markets.." and we dont hang out in"county detention centers either.." We were gonna PAY to have ours but will wait for this one to take advantage of what taxpayers are paying for...Thanks Northgate..(so funny you criticize the jail nurses..if you only knew what they thought of YOU!!)..do you not GET IT that once in the prison system you really dont have many rights left? Did you think it was a weekend at a timeshare? Silly Ray....
Thanks Ray for bringing up H1N1. I caught this lovely little bug after spending a week at a resort in Mission Bay with my nephew (I won't mention the name of resort) last summer. My nephew & I both got sick. But I was sick for over 5 weeks. I actually felt like I was going to die!! You mentioned MRSA, too. Did you know that all hospitals now are doing MRSA test on patients before they have surgical procedures. I know because several of my family members have been tested for it. I had never even heard of it until my relatives mentioned they had to have a nose swab 2 weeks prior to surgery.
MRSA has been around for a long time..ask any nurse whos worked in SNFs or hospitals..its just getting publicity now..go figure
Just Wondering, I'm sure anyone in the medical community has heard of it and I think why we might not all be familiar with the term "MRSA" staph infections and sepsis have been in hospitals for ages. I had surgery 5 years ago and 8 eight years ago, and they weren't testing for MRSA then. So this is definitely new for hospitals.
justwondering: Just pointing out some facts. The regiment given to children here in Mexifornia differs from let's say Indiana, and why is that? As for MRSA, since my mother received it at FH, I did extensive research on it and what I would is alarming. Yes it's been around for years, but look at the chart, when it becomes more severe, enlightening huh? As for jails, you have rights, they can't kill you, infect you or abuse you. See there is a thing called "natural rights" the illegals spew them all the time, where you been? Amazing when I enlighten, the "baiters" come out. ![]()
Get a Clue: Because I live with a person infected with MRSA, I get tested all the time, always negative, but it does restrict who I can permit into my home, Guess it's Motel 6 for me.
Re#1o..just what did you"enlighten us with?" OLD news ,Ray. the articles about whooping cough..perhaps you should read up on it as well...knowledge is power..
So all 8 deaths have been Latino infants? I would like to know of the 384 known cases of pertussis how many are Latino- I am very curious and why is this? These numbers MEAN something- numbers do not lie. justwondering- not all babies get these vaccines, I know plenty of parents that have opted out of the vaccinations for a variety of reasons and they are not Latino. I have friends and acquaintances that are adults and never had one vaccination in their lifetime. I am very disappointed with the pertussis vaccine. Once this "epidemic" was made public, I went ahead and updated my 2 year olds DTAP vaccine (the P stands for Pertussis). It was one of the scariest things- her reaction to it. Her fever rose to almost 104, she acted listless for about a week and layed on the floor with her blankey (this is a 2 year old- they do not do this unless it is the end of the day and they are beat tired!), she slept bad at night, she was irritable, etc. My husband said "Never again". I ended up doing a ton of research on vaccinations and yes, while the population that is never the same after a vaccine is very small, it is not very small when it is your child who is changed forever. A 2 year old does survive whooping cough although it is HELL for the child and the parents. Thank God my daughter made a full recovery within a couple of weeks of her vaccine, we are very blessed she did. Honestly, I wish people would stay home or keep their kids when they are ill. Whooping cough is VERY OBVIOUS once the "whoop" starts- YouTube whooping cough and you can watch children that have it. It is heartbreaking and at the same time, you wonder why they are out in public. I understand it is not obvious in the beginning- the symptoms are like a common cold, so this is probably when it spreads like wild fire.
#11.."restricts who comes into my home?" seriously..you need to pay attention to the MRSA guidelines Ray..casual contact??
My mother has MRSA in her lunds, breathing is not casual contact. Do me a favor, read up on the disease, can't keep replying to nonsense. time has value.
Mom of Lots..agree with you..EVERYONE who is sick SHOULD ideally stay home ..but in these economic times sometimes thats not possible, unfortunately. If everyone washed their hands..covered their mouths..used common sense alot of these "bugs" wouldnt be floating around.Glad your 2 year old pulled through..its hard when our kids have a terrible reaction to vaccines and I am sure thats why many choose not to vaccinate their children..its a personal decision. And its NOT only Hispanics that dont get vaccinated...but I think medical statistics show that vaccines are better than the disease...
Mom of Lots - Sorry to hear that your child had such a bad reaction to the DTAP. I had mine updated 2 years ago as an adult, and still had probable Whooping Cough earlier this summer (I work in a school and was exposed to children, caucasian children, incidently that had it). It was fairly awful, but I still did everything I could to prevent it. The reason these diseases such as pertussis and measles, etc. are making a comeback is that more parents are choosing not to have their chidren vaccinated (sorry justwondering, you are mistaken, it is a choice whether or not to vaccinate your children and no public school will keep them out- you just sign something saying if anyone in the school comes down with one of these diseases you will keep your child home for the duration of a quarrantine) At any rate, in the case of Pertussis, Mom of Lots, it is unfortunate, but from what I have read you can be infected and contageous, but show no symptoms for up to 21 days. This means you could have passed it on to a lot of people without even knowing it in the meantime. But, in general, I know what you mean about staying home and keeping kids home when sick!
I'm just so excited to know once again my tax dollars are paying for someone elses free vaccines. I guess thats what I have to pay for in order to send my kid to school and not catch this cough or disease. Oh ya almost forgot the school that my tax dollars pay for again so that all these kids could walk around like a human peatrie dish spreading their colds. I wonder if I took my family to Mexico if they would get the same treatment, free vaccines and healthcare, education and then foot the bill for it all. I don't think so actually I know so. I say everyday be May day a day without a mexican.
Fall Res- that is another issue- the fact that adults and children still get the disease at times even when fully vaccinated for the that particular disease. I have heard that is can make the symptoms less than they would be if you were not vaccinated. Thank you for yours and justwonderings concern for my 2 year old- it broke my heart in 2. I literally held her one morning and just cried and told her I was sorry. I literally thought she may not pull through and then I read all these articles online about all these kids that do not fair well after vaccinations and, of course, it got my mind stirring. I was actually relieved her symptoms were not worse- like seizures and trouble breathing, etc. I do understand that these instances are rare, but when it's your kid it is your life! I have 4 children and a baby on the way and all of my children are fully vaccinated at the time. However, our decision is to highly consider not vaccinating our baby. You are right, it is a very personal decision, but one I will not make on a whim- we continue to research and read on this topic. ![]()
My husband was curious when we discussed the article this evening, "Are they offering free carne asada with the vaccines at the local El Tigre?"
mom of lots: Oh well.
ray regarding your comment on posting #2 - about 5 years ago I got really sick and ended up having whooping cough at age 47. I'm not latino, I'm not poor, I'm am white. I was vaccinated as a child, but I do believe that like some of the vaccines I probably needed a booster. I know that our country needs to stop the illegal immigration but you really need to think before you comment.
fallbrookres: You could have caught your whooping cough walking around a market while Lupe and her seven kids were coughing or from your child who brought it back from school. Don't have to be latino to catch it but a disease long since eliminated, got to have been in contact with an infected third worlder, only one close by. I always think, you?
fallbrookres- you are correct, the whooping cough vaccine only lasts until about age 10 or so. "They" recommend a booster after that if you still want to be considered vaccinated against the disease, although even then, you can still get it. I can only imagine how awful it was to experience that disease! |
