RAMONA - A 12-year-old Ramona girl was home safe today thanks to her grandmother who gave her life when she stood up to an armed kidnapper who was pulling the eighth-grader into his truck at a Texas gas station.

Cassidy Blankenbaker and her older brother had just arrived in Amarillo, Texas, for their annual summer visit with their grandparents when the tragedy occurred last week, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

The family had stopped at a truckstop for a bathroom break when an overweight man in a cowboy hat and boots jumped out of his pickup truck and grabbed Cassidy by the wrist, ordering her at gunpoint to get into his truck, according to the newspaper.

As 63-year-old Sharrel Blankenbaker put herself between her granddaughter and the man and yelled, she was shot in the lung by the kidnapper, according to the newspaper.

"I think she'd have done that for anyone," Cassidy told the newspaper. "She was just that kind of person."

Cassidy broke free in the chaos and ran but was chased by the kidnapper, who eventually gave up after Cassidy's older brother hid her, the Union-Tribune reported.

Immediately after giving up on Cassidy, the man snatched another young girl in the area and was pulled over a short time later by local law enforcement, who shot him dead. He was identified as Gary Don Carner, 58,

according to the Union-Tribune.

The girl he snatched after Cassidy was not hurt.

Earlier in the night, Carner apparently failed in attempts to kidnap two women.

This is exactly why I do not let my pre-teen daughter out of my sight or allow her to go to the restroom alone. Glad they shot and killed the SOB.

TEMMOM951 no one was let out of anyone's sight. The family entered the truck stop as a group and exited as a group. The monster grabbed her within 3 feet of her grandmother and sibling.

"The girl he snatched after Cassidy was not hurt". Not according to this story, but people have to realize if he was not caught for hours later, he had time to r*a*pe and s*domize this 11 year old. And yes, she was hurt if he did rape her. This will leave a scar on this child for the rest of her life, not to mention he may have had diseases. This is the part society does not want to hear and when these little girls grow up and cannot have a "normal" relationship with a male she is deemed "strange" and ostricized for it. Child molestation and rape crimes are rising and these perverts are walking among us. It is a shame, but we must warn our daughters about these monsters.

If this makes the print version of the Village News, it won't be the first time Cassidy Blankenbaker's
older brother has appeared in the publication. My track and field articles about Fallbrook High
School having defeated a great Ramona team mentioned that Dylan Blankenbaker qualified for
the state cross-country finals last year. Although Dylan wears a Ramona uniform rather than
a Fallbrook uniform and prepared for his high school career through the Olive Peirce Middle School
track program rather than through Fallbrook's feeder program, he's no stranger to the Fallbrook
High School distance runners and it's a tragedy which affects all of us.

Coach Hamlin (if not Coach Albanese of Ramona) told me that the track and field non-league dual meets
between Fallbrook and Ramona will be an annual event. We look forward to seeing Dylan in
Fallbrook under happier circumstances.

hard story to read. from the girls picture she was a very pretty girl so he was obviously a sexual predator and that was the motive.
