Translate this page Galaxy of Glass Show features new and historic glass artThursday, May 20th, 2010 Issue 20, Volume 14.
"The Galaxy of Glass is a signature show of the Fallbrook Art Center that is enjoyed and supported by the region each year," said Mary Perhacs, executive director of the Fallbrook Art Center. "This year is particularly exciting due to the visually stimulating new features of the show, including a presentation of historically important works and the use of neon for the first time." The Everett Family, owners of Fallbrook Propane Gas Co., originated the show 13 years ago and continues their strong support, not only as sponsors, but as participating artists. This year, Merrill and his son Chris created new works and also met with long-time art center supporters Stuart and Linda Robinson to select from their collection of historic glass art. Visitors will have the opportunity to see works by glass art greats Chihuly, Glancy, Littleton & Vogel, Buechner and Marquis. This section of the show will also include a history of the American Glass Movement as well as the Robinson’s personal stories regarding their collection. Chihuly is a particularly important and revolutionary artist in his field, who is credited for establishing blown glass as an accepted medium for installation art. Pushing the boundaries of glass art expression, San Diego based Kathleen Mitchell will present two new neon works, adding to the visual experience. Glass work in the show will reflect myriad processes including blown, torched, slumped, fused, cast, and etched. An opening reception, with artists in attendance, will take place on Saturday, May 22 from 5 to 7 p.m. ($10 per person, FAC Premier Level members free), with the show running daily from May 23 to June 27.
