Collision on SR76 injures four; 11-year-old Temecula boy airlifted with life-threatening injuries to Rady Children's Hospital

An 11-year-old Temecula boy sustained life-threatening injuries this morning when the 2009 Toyota Camry his father was driving collided head-on with a Chevrolet Trailblazer on State Route 76, just west of Old Highway 395. Emergency workers at the scene immediately called for a medical helicopter to transport the child to Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego, said North County Fire public information officer John Buchanan.

The collision occurred just after 9 a.m. this morning when the boy's 33-year-old father apparently allowed his Camry to drift from the westbound lane over into the eastbound lane of the highway. The boy was the only passenger in the vehicle, but was riding in the back seat behind the driver's side. Both father and son were wearing seat belts.

The father sustained a non-life threatening injury, but was flown to Sharp Hospital in San Diego for treatment.

The Camry struck the 2002 Trailblazer in which a mature couple from Vista were traveling.

"The couple had non-life threatening injuries and they were transported by ground to Palomar Hospital," said Buchanan. The couple were wearing their seat belts as well.

"It took us several minutes to extricate Advertisement

the couple from Vista from their vehicle," added Buchanan.

While the youth sustained what appeared to be the gravest injuries, Buchanan said the situation could have been worse.

"Fortunately in this case, the air bags in both vehicles deployed, and that, in conjunction with seat belts being used, it prevented even more serious injury or death at the scene," said Buchanan.

SR76 was closed for close to an hour due to the collision.

(previous story update)

All traffic lanes are open and the SIG ALERT has been lifted. More details to come.

(previous story)

TRAFFIC ALERT:

Traffic is stopped in all lanes on State Route 76 from Bonsall to I-15. It is severely gridlocked due to a head-on collision between a Trailblazer and a Camry at about 8:45 am. The accident occurred near 76 and Old Hwy 395 which has left the front ends of both vehicles smoking. Medical helicopter is on the scene.

There is at least one juvenile passenger with serious injuries. Life Flight has already landed and transported the juvenile, according the the California Highway Patrol.

I have seen many disasters on this highway in 35 years of looking over Highway 76 from my hill.
Will it ever be fixed?
Why can we not make it safer?
Where do our taxes go??
My prayers are with all involved.
My votes are going to new people.
They can't be any worse than those serving now.

Glad he was in the back seat and both had on their belts.

I used to go to Orange County and I hate 91 because of the traffice coming and going both ways. I used to drive home in the evening on 76 and I dreaded it. The fast moving cars, inconsidered drivers and the narrowed lanes made me nervous so I drive very slow. The horrible part is the headlights directly hitted me in the face causing temporary blindness and the horrible curvy and wavy street. I DO NOT LIKE 76!!!
My prayers to all.

This boy will be in my prayers. Perhaps his father was not familiar with the road and the sharp turns. He could have taken one too fast and the momentum forced him into the other lane. I hate that part of the road. It is a death trap.

My heart and prayers go out to the little boy and his family. I live off 76 and the cars definitely go to fast around those curves. My son had his accident on 76 by a careless driver who ran him off the embankment causing his car to roll off the embankment. He is now a quad in a wheelchair! People should drive more slowly and watch their driving. I shall pray for the family....

We have lived in Fallbrook for 11 yrs. now, the month we moved here the 76 4-lanes was discussed and they still are just talking about the final construction timeline, I have driven by 5 serious accidents on this road being less than a minute from them happening (a rollover Lexus only a week ago near Gird Road that we never here about, (this person walked away) I have contacted Caltrans regarding better curve signage and road markings for the past months, It may be the only way to make this road safer until it is completed, unfortunately they respond in the same manner that Sandag does. It seems that a few dollars could improve this road by more and better markings of the curves and reasonable speeds be posted for the curses and brush on the shoulder be removed to make it saver NOW! Cal Trans JUST DO IT!!

Everytime I go to Fallbrook from my house which is right by 76 and the I-15, I go through Reche Rd. Although the road is not much better there is a lot less traffic so I feel safer and people don't drive as crazy on that road. I stay off of 76 as much as possible. I have only lived here for about a year and a half and have seen a fatality, a rollover and a pile up all on this side of Mission Rd on the 76. It's definitely scary.

There was another near fatal crash a couple miles further west late last night. Another head on and most likely a drunk driver involved. My son's girlfriend was only a few minutes behind the poor victims. Thank God for her, but so sad for those others.

M.E. - the widening of this highway has been held up for decades because of the whacko environmentalists in our midst. All the litigation and "environmental impact studies" over the years is what has held up this project. Now the State is broke and we may never see it completed in our life time!

to Ray (the dumb one) says : Well the story was a tad bit vague, usual FBVN follow up. I can only go by experience driving the roadway and unless your a complete moron, other factors MUST have contributed to someone crossing over into on coming traffic. I can only assume a cellular phone which I see daily on SR-76. Now if I am wrong, I will stand corrected but let's face the facts, it's impossible to foul up unless your distracted. I am really sorry if my heart does not bleed for the stupid. A young gang member shot, a off roader showing off, a pregnant woman bunji jumping off a bridge. We are responsible for our own actions, and if they are reckless or illresponsible and someone dies, no tears here. Why don't hese folks save us some time and ink and just muzzle to head it.

Ray sure too many people on cellphones - No question and the Cops do little if anything to stop it. But reality is that there are many factiors that can make someone swerve. Maybe an animal ran out in the road. Maybe a truck had lost a ladder or something else on the road - this happens way too often. Maybe he was distracted by something else going on in the car or maybe he had a blow out. But to presume without any knowledge is poor judgement on your behalf. So grow up...

Jar: At least I am honest about it. I don't use phony "god bless" nonsense. How in the heck can you drift into oncoming traffic unless you were doing something else instead of driving like using your phone, messin with the MP3 player, or just being careless. The car in question has "no" recalls, it was a late model vehicle, what else is left. Since the story lacked any information, a good investigator, which I am would conclude negligence on the part of the driver until other facts or witness statements are taken. It's the old saying, "hear hoof beats, think horses not zebras". Well if it was a zebra, maybe someone will come forward and tell us, other than that, negligence on the part of the driver due to outside distractions will be the conclusion. Besides too many people lately are having severe mental brain fa*ts. Let's knock off all this phony crapola.

Who has your company provided numerous consultations for (remember - you are talking TA investigations, so talk about them.) 3. Are you currently a DOD member, contractor or sub-contractor? If not, you do not hold a DOD secret clearance, you may have held one before, but you do not now. 4. This situation is saddening and my prayers are with those involved.

As for those complaining about the 76, you need to drive better. I'm not talking about slower, I am saying more cautiously because I can drive through their safely above the speed limit and that is not the point, but the point is so many drivers are just terrible. Checking text messages, eating, talking on the phone or to other passengers, etc. I have seen them all as a commuter student. A little distraction like those mentioned can easily cost so much damage, especially at higher speeds. Put simple: drive better and prevent accidents.

Reality: the screen name fits. It's a shame that the rest of the "granola state" can't figure it out. But here it's a constitutional right for their dog to litter your lawn.

Redneck Bill : Need thirty five cents? I did the fire alarm systems at Point Loma Amphib Base, The old Navallex complex on Pacific Coast highway, Hughes, Linear and others. Want to get pissed even more? I possess a exposed firearm's license. I basically can get a job with any government contract as long as they do an update which might be a problem today in this PC climate but who really cares, I'm getting too old for nonsense. As for hating the government? I don't hate the government, just the current one. So Neck...... My arrest was meaningless except to you. As you say.... "live with it".

Grunt: Got my clearance when I joined, 1978. When I opted out and became a normal person back in 1986, I started working for government contracts and sub contractors, my clearance still is considered "active" but as I stated before, I need to update my doings for the past few years. So it would not be a problem to get updated so I could work on government contracts, but why do I want to? Believe me, it's not a big deal, same for my eight, just another job, nothing more.

And, no, regradless of what you think, you do NOT have a clearance - you had one on at one time, once you left the exciting field of fire alarm installation, it went away. (Not there is much to getting one). Still, instead of adding more er, bovine excretment, i.e. firearm's license, how about explaining your other claims? I am still interested in who had you consult for TA investigations and how your security clearance made you a good investigator.

usmcret - the "exposed firearm's license" is most likely a guard card allowing him to be armed while working in that position. If he has kept it up to date then he speaketh truth; if he allowed it to expire then he lives on (technically). I do believe Real Ray has mentioned being an armed guard as one of the MANY occupations he claims to have held during his tenure here on earth.

Now, as for the traffic accident investigator career he also once had - don't be holdin' your breath for prrof of it's existence.

Just realized some typing errors at #37 (was tired at 0445 hours) - ...if he allowed it to expire then he lives on (technically) his past certification.

Also, I do now recall Ray Ray claiming, in the past, he was once a "traffic cop" back east somewhere. That would probably be the equivalent of a Community Services Officer (not a "cop") such as they have in Oceanside and Vista, whom may take non-injury accident reports. This is not the same as a sworn peace officer / traffic investigator who conduct injury and deadly accidents, whom would then be needed to testify as to their expertise in criminal (maybe sometimes civil) court.

Did I get those right, Ray Ray? Correct me if I am wrong please, as I know you may - LOL

Ray,

Dude, if you are happy with your life, I'm a monkey's uncle.

You are one of the most negative, unhappy, angry people I have ever come across.

What you have failed to realize, is that you can't control life. You only control the way you view it. You have chosen to see things negatively. And that colors your view of the world. Every thing and every one is bad or messed up, in your view. With the exception of other extremists and hateful people.

There are bad people in the world, and there are bad things in life. But being hateful destroys only you, not the people you hate.

I'm not trying to come across as better than you, because I know I'm not. But hate isn't one of my problems. It's obvious from what you write it's one of yours.

The reason people keep coming back for more is you spout nonsense. Thinking people have trouble with what you write.

And no matter how many keyboards you go through, the red line will always appear for misspelled words.

Also, I'm proud of my service.

As for your lack of belief in God, this is America. People die so you can think what you want. But picture this: You're dead, and the lights didn't just go out. You don't have a body, but you're consciousness is still there. Well all I know is my opinion of Ray just stepped up one notch by quoting Obi-Wan Kanobi in post 50. He is now one spot above whale poop. I'll bow out of this line of comments with one more quote, "I'm getting too old for this sort of thing."

Cranky: Tried to keep it simple, simple minds, not the group., "don't you forget about me" Danny Glover in Lethal Weapon, Maybe next time I'll quote Dr. Strangelove, considering. But that quote was not of Star Wars but Nichi, pardon my spelling. Redneck Bill: Love ya too.

Ray, the great pumpkin and Santa Claus do not exist. Elvis is dead. Jesus Christ still lives. He rose from the dead. He died for you and for me. I choose to accept His gift and follow Him. You choose to blaspheme Him and make jokes. You and I are mortal. God will not be mocked. One day when you kneel at the throne of judgement (and you will) the excuse of "well gosh I just didn't know you were real" is not going to cut it. Thank you Pessimistic, I know I am wasting my breath but I do pray for Ray. God bless.

Pink says : Look, I'm not one of those folks who goes to court to have crosses removed, or rains on other folks holidays but what I can't stand is judging me by your flimsy beliefs. I rule my own path, no raggie from 2000 years ago directs my path. I would appreciate you refraining from placing your beliefs on me. By the way, read your bible, murder, rape, robbery, incest, genocide, more trash there than a cheap Mexican novella. in other words Pink, "thump elsewhere".

Pink : Really? Can you prove it, See him, touch him? Until you do, please quit ramming your beliefs down throats. Religion like Homosexuality, don't ask, don't tell o.k.?

Ray - #63, do as you say then - you are the 1st to judge others based on your flimsy beliefs. Christ came, he lead a pure life, the rape, murder, robbery etc that you list was not done by those following Christ in the Bible. This is at least twice you have implied that followers of Christ committed all of the above. Read, understand, then criticize, if you must.

Wow Ray I think I struck a nerve!! Feeling convicted are you? Good. You are able to dish it out but you can't take it. I'm not thumping and I'm certainly not ramming it down anyone's throat. what a cop out you are. You are FREE to CHOOSE as am I. Faith is the belief in things "unseen". I don't have to see Him or touch Him to know that He is real, I know it in my heart and in my soul. Just remember everytime you make the kind of statements that you make Satan laughs.

usmcret: I support sending Marine engineers to the gulf to repair the oil spill, The marines will fix the problem but have the gulf stream going the wrong way. Sorry Pink and Grunt: Give me 12 drunks, shallow water and some laege stones and even I can pull off the illusion of walking on water. Nuff said.

Ray the comment about the water walking was old when you used it the first 47 times, you need some new material. Many athiests have died in their non-belief and one thing is certain, they now know they were wrong and there is a God. Unfortunately after you are dead it is too late. You are a very foolish man but then darkness always hides from the light.

For what it's worth, it was confirmed the driver of the Camry was trying to view his Blackberry. He admitted it. Whoever Ray is was absolutely correct.
