CHP seeking witnesses to Sunday's fiery motorcycle crash on Hwy 76

Issue 17, Volume 14.
Shelli DeRobertis
Staff Writer

The California Highway patrol is seeking witnesses to Sunday’s fiery crash on SR-76 that ended with a motorcyclist becoming badly burned.

Martin Davidoff, 60, of Wildomar, was traveling eastbound on SR-76 on his 2002 Yamaha Motorcycle, when for unknown reasons he collided into the rear of a 2008 Chevy Colorado pickup truck that was stopped on eastbound SR-76, west of Magee Road near Pala Casino.

CHP public affairs officer Eric Newbury said the gas tank of the motorcycle ruptured and sprayed fuel onto the roadway and onto Davidoff, which then ignited into flames and engulfed Davidoff and the motorcycle.

Shortly after the crash, citizens helped pull Davidoff from underneath his motorcycle and a Pala Tribal Law Enforcement officer also aided Davidoff as he used a fire extinguisher to put out the flames.

Mercy Air transported Davidoff to UCSD Burn Center for major trauma and burns to the majority of his body, according to officials

"We need the people who saw the collision take place," Newbury said, and added that there were witnesses of the crash who left the scene before investigators could question them about details of the crash.

The CHP is investigating the crash, and alcohol or drugs are not suspected factors in the incident.

But Newbury called the crash bizarre because it’s not very common for a gas tank to rupture then ignite right away.

He said a tank would start to smoke first, and then burn if there was enough fuel. He said in his 12 Advertisement

years of service as a CHP officer that he had never heard of a fire happening, such as the one in this case.

Parts of Davidoff’s body were severely burned and when questioned on how Davidoff was doing, Newbury said that it "doesn’t look good."

The driver or the Chevy, Elizabeth Osuna, 33, of Santa Ysabel, was not injured in the crash, according to officials.

Witnesses are asked to call the Oceanside area office with any information they have on this collision: (760) 757-1675.

Hwy 76 opens in Pala, motorcylist airlifted to UCSD Medical Center

UPDATE: The motorcyclist who suffered burns when his bike collided with a turck and caught fire on Highway 76 in Pala today was airlifted to the burn unit at UCSD Medical Center, according to Mike Mohler at Cal Fire. It appears that the closure is being lifted and 76 is reopening to traffic as of 3:15 pm.

ALERT:

PALA - At 1:43 pm today Highway 76 had been completely closed in Pala because of a collision that resulted in a burn injury to a motorcyclist, according to the California Highway Patrol. At about 1:29 pm today the accident between a motorcycle and a truck caused the closure. Apparently the motorcycle was fully engulfed, the rider suffered burn injuries, and a medical helicopter responded as well as mulitiple agencies. The accident appears to have happened east of Pala Casino.

There is no information available as to when the road will reopen.

My prayers go to the man on the bike, I will pray for you and your burns. Being burned is one of the most painful things a human being can go through. May God bless you and heal you fast.

Another accident and possibly a loss of life on State Route "I wanna keep my quality of life because I'm a hillie and nimby" 76 I really don't care about your horses, your golf and garden clubs or your narrow self interests, how many people have to get injured or die before you folks get off your "hippie" bandwagon? Wake the " f bomb" up!

While I don't agree necessarily with Ray's tact, I agree wholeheartedly with his message. That highway is no match for the traffic volume that travels it each day. The construction will drastically reduce the safety issues that occur EACH day. Now the issue about the motorcycles is a whole other one but I don't wish burn injuries on anyone. May he have a "least painful" and speedy recovery.

If you can't drive on a two lane road find a way around.

I came upon the accident within minutes and prayed that God would help the rider...my prayers were answered. From where I saw things it looked like the ride may not have survived but thank God he did. Bless you and recover quickly.

76, Ortega, etc... The roads themselves aren't really all that bad. It's the idiots that have to speed, tailgate, and insist on passing everone that raises the danger level!!

I frequently drive highway 76 and have had many close calls with motorcycles as well as cars. A BIT OF ADVICE "SLOW THE F BOMB DOWN, PUT YOUR F BOMB PHONE DOWN AND PAY ATTENTION". This isnt a freeway, Its a two lane highway. All you non locals....you will get to the casino with enough time to spare. Trust me. My prayers are with the rider and the woman in the car.....

It really sucks that this happened, but there is no need to talk bs on a highway and people that live around it. We all need to respect everything around us. Dont fear, just respect!

my prayers with him also, but Dave at #11 is right. The same idea as heading up the moutain to Palomar and Idywill.

Slow down and get off the darn cell phone. It isn't a raceway for bikers.

God Bless.

Marty's a friend of mine and isn't the kind of jerk that uses 2 laners as a raceway. Cut the guy some slack, Robert 13 and Dave 11. Anyways, I pray for your family Debbie, I want him to pull through. If anyone can make it happen, it's UCSD Burn Ctr. I adore your uncle and I am heartbroken. My prayers to all of you

Per California law, the person who runs into the back of another is at fault. He was following to close and did not leave himself enough room to stop. Very sad.

matt: Rude? Seems you got a "F-" in school for reading comprehension, too bad because I support fixing that death trap called SR-76 that killed your friend or family member. I reject all the ex-hipster's who whine about their quality of life, their views, the noise or any other kum bah yah excuse they use. In ten more years, nobody will have the luxury of a quality of life, views or quiet. For decades now, delay's, lawsuits and endless studies have stopped the expansion project from moving forward, meanwile the body count rises, you friend or family member has just been added to the wall. There is no reason for so many death on a single roadway, that's the point I'm trying to make. I hope that clears things up Matt.

When the citizen's of California passed a proposition allowing the tribes to have casinos on their land, certain conditions were enacted, today few have been followed. One was to create facilities without outside assistance. Still trying to find using the Bureau of Indian Affairs website for a tribe called "Harrah's". That these casinos would develop in time, not immediately and that the tribes would contribute to any inconveniences caused by their casino's to the general public such as road improvements. On SR-76, three casino's use the roadway and only one quarter of a mile on each side of some casinos have been improved, the remainder of the roadway remains as it was for the last thirty years. No Pechanga uses the roadway linking Pala casino to their casino in Temecula, that road remains in disrepair and unable to handle the cross casino traffic, besides it's a major smuggling route. Now the tribes do have a great PR propaganda campaign showing how they assist others outside the community, it's politics, the longest running campaign I've seen but it's no excuse for the tribes not to pay for access to their money pits, that means SR-76 from the casino's to I-15, from Pechanga to Pala. Live up to your agreements. Remember the citizenry can taketh it away as fast as they giveth!

My Uncle was one of the nicest people you will ever know. If you didn't know him then you missed out on something very special. If you read the news reports, they say that they think the bike had a defect. It was not his fault. R.I.P.Uncle Marty. I love you and will never ever forget you...

For the last two years, Marty Davidoff was among my best friends and the most genuine man I knew. He knew the world was a brighter place when it was filled with music and laughter and he did his best to add his share. He was also an animal lover who cared for his dog like he was his best friend, and took care of his friends like he took care of his dog. Somehow he may have made a mistake on his bike and the freak gas tank rupture took his life way too early. Fortunately no one else was hurt on the road that day but many of us are hurting by his loss. If you didnt know him, you missed a great man but if you want to take a moment to honor him, hug your loved ones and pet your dog.

I only heard about Marty on Saturday from another of Marty's friends who kindly called me to share the news, thinking that I might not have heard what happened to him (which was true). I am still in disbelief and wonder struck at how quickly everything that we are and are living for can be finished forever in a moment's notice. It would be great to know how this tragic accident happened, but even if we never find out, no matter how freakish it was, I think it is most important to honor the legacy of this man/friend/kind-hearted soul from the 60's (just like me), who are part of history itself, and have helped shape our world into what it is now. Loving and good always to his fellow man. May we all learn to be like him. I would love to hear from a family member if possible at bsaflooring@gmail.com

i was married to Marty for 35 years and he did not ever ever drive carelessly, recklessly or any other way but cautiously. I have ridden on motorcycles with him since the 70s and he never took a risk, except the risk that is getting on a motorcycle in the first place. He was a kind, caring, sensitive and loving man who leaves behind a family, frienda, A beautiful home and a loving dog. He should not have had to leave this world like this. Rest in peace Marty and may there be Starbucks in Heaven .

90% of motorcyclists drive crazy and cut people off, i have witnessed many of the riders passing cars, forcing the opposite traffic to go in the dirt. I have no sympathy for motorcycle riders. I also ride a bike on east mission road, the riders force me out of my bike lane, because they use the bike lane when there is traffic. It sounds like he was one of the 10%. Sorry for the rant. I hope he makes it through.

well its been three months since this horrific accident and Marty's family is having to come to terms with the fact that no matter what happened out there, he was not a reckless driver and would never have cut someone off or taken harebrained risks. Be that as it may, the accident happened, he did not survive, and life in its own way goes on. We are saddened by the loss of Marty. He missed his first grandchild being born just one month ago. He was looking forward to finally having a grandbaby. We continue to miss him and wonder what if.... what if he left the house a minute later or sooner? what if he decided to go to the coast instead of Julian that bright May morning? Take nothing for granted. Be kind to your loved ones and give them some slack. We have one time around and sometimes its really not fair how it all ends. Rest in peace Marty.. I will miss you forever.
