Maurice Dubois encourages vigil attendees to push for tougher penalties for child predatorsMonday, March 8th, 2010 Issue 10, Volume 14.
Amber's father Maurice Dubois addressed the crowd asking them to turn their sadness into action by pushing for tougher penalties and stricter laws to protect children from predators. He encouraged them to act like Amber's favorite animal, the wolf, and hunt down child predators. "Wolves hunt to survive, wolves hunt together to catch their prey," he said, "We as parents and the community need to make a change for the protection of our children." He also spoke of the need to work against groups who aid criminals. Chelsea King's parents were there to give support to Amber's family and friends. Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher and a representative of Kelly and Brent King will convene a news conference Tuesday morning to announce their partnership and preliminary work on "Chelsea’s Law". Authorities released few details about their investigation into Amber Dubois's death. During a news conference on Sunday afternoon, Escondido police Chief Jim Maher said only that detectives were "following a lead" when they located Amber's remains in a "very rugged and remote" locale near the Riverside County border. "Positive identification was subsequently made by the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office late Saturday afternoon by way of a dental-records comparison," Maher said. "Her parents were notified in person by Escondido and sheriff's investigators Saturday night." Maher declined to take questions from reporters, citing concerns over the possibility of compromising the investigation by releasing too much information. The case returned to widespread public attention last week following the arrest of a 30-year-old registered sex offender in connection with the disappearance and apparent slaying of 17-year-old Chelsea King of Poway, whose body was found Tuesday in a shallow grave near Lake Hodges. John Albert Gardner III -- who was ordered held without bail after pleading not guilty to raping and murdering Chelsea -- lived in Escondido when Amber disappeared. Investigators were looking into any involvement the suspect might have had with Amber or the victims of other unsolved crimes. "The Amber Dubois crime scene is still being processed and (Gardner) remains a focus of the investigation," Escondido police Lt. Craig Carter said this afternoon. Overhead views of the area shot by television news helicopters at midday showed searchers combing through heavy brush on sloping terrain near several large canopies that had been erected a short distance from a dirt road. Authorities had road access to the area fully blocked. It was in the same general locale that the remains of 7-year-old Leticia Hernandez of Oceanside were found 15 months after she disappeared from her home in 1989. Following Sunday's briefing, Amber's father, Maurice Dubois, took a moment to thank everyone who had helped search for his daughter, especially the hundreds of Advertisement for much of last year. "They were the most dedicated people you could ever imagine," he said. "Without them, we couldn't have done anything."
ESCONDIDO - A candlelight vigil will be held tonight at Escondido High School for 14-year-old Amber Dubois, whose skeletal remains were found on the Pala Indian Reservation more than a year after she disappeared while walking to the school. Extra counselors were on hand today at Escondido High School to help students cope with the weekend discovery of Amber's skeletal remains, more than a year after the freshman disappeared while walking to school. Despite a prolonged search by law enforcement, her family and volunteers since she disappeared, Amber's body was not found until Saturday. "The discovery was made in the early morning hours of Saturday, in a very rugged and remote section of Pala," Escondido police Chief Jim Maher said at a news conference. Pala is in northern San Diego County, about 25 miles from Escondido. Amber's body was found west of Pala Temecula Road, about three miles north of the historic Pala Mission. It was the same area where the remains of 7-year-old Leticia Hernandez was found 15 months after she disappeared from her Oceanside home in 1989, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported. Maher said detectives were following a lead when Amber's body was found. "Positive identification was subsequently made by the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office late Saturday afternoon by way of a dental records comparison," Maher said. "Her parents were notified in person by Escondido and sheriff's investigators Saturday night." Maher did not take questions because of the ongoing investigation. Amber returned to public attention after the arrest of John Albert Gardner III, 30, in connection with the disappearance and death of 17-year-old Chelsea King in nearby Rancho Bernardo. Gardner -- who was ordered held without bail after pleading not guilty to raping and murdering Chelsea -- is a registered sex offender who lived in Escondido when Amber disappeared. Investigators were looking into any involvement he might have had with the girl, or in other unsolved crimes. Because Maher did not take questions, the source of the tip or any possible role played by Gardner was unclear. But Bill Garcia, a private investigator hired by Amber's family shortly after she disappeared, told the Union-Tribune he was told by a person with firsthand knowledge of the case that the tip about the location did not come from Gardner. "The entire Chelsea King event emotionally pulled at somebody who had this information," Garcia told the newspaper. "They've seen the community in a lot of pain. Someone who had been afraid to say something finally came forward." Amber's father, Maurice Dubois, took a moment to thank everyone in the search for Amber, especially the hundreds of volunteers who looked for the girl every weekend for much of last year. "They were the most dedicated people you could ever imagine," Maurice Dubois said. "Without them, we couldn't have done anything." 24 comments
God has Amber in his arms with Chelsa
that sucks
my candle is lit
sad sad sad. my prayers are with the family. i can't imagine the horrible pain the parents' of these beautiful young women are going through. i'm praying for both of them.
Bless this family..also wonder since there was a 100,000.reward for Amber Info who would get this?Have the authorities said where the tips came from?
My heart goes out to both the Dubois and King families on there very tragic losses. There are two solutions to these horrible crimes. One would the Death Penalty. The second is to hold those responsible for letting these offenders back into society pay a price. Nothing unfortunately will bring your Daughters back. However, these henious crimes must be stopped or there will be more crimes of this nature. All over this country and foreign countries children disappear or are murdered. We as a nation amongst many need to stand together and say no more. Both of your families need to hang together and there are many all over the United States who feel your hurt. Norman
Although I do agree about "tougher" sentences for this type of crime, I also agree what once the person serves his sentence, does his probationary period, lives up to all the terms of his release, he's a free person. Even the arrested deserve the right that everyone enjoys. Our country is one of the few developed nations that does "nothing" to rehabilitate it's criminals, all we do is "punish" and the repeat rate of our released criminals is over 80%. Now all it takes to have the rest of your life ruined is "she told me was eighteen" and until the day the individual dies, his or her life has ended. The law is too vague, it makes virtually "anyone" accused a "sexual predator" barred from almost everywhere in society. We need someone to write a law that makes sense so that the victims and the ones charged have their rights respected.
Sorry Ray I really completely disagree with you on this one. I don't believe a Registered Sex Offender should ever be "free". Sex Offenders can never be cured or rehabilitated. Statistics bear this out. So in order to protect our children we have to be able to know where Sex Offenders are at all times. As I've stated before my opinion is once you rape a child you should be sentenced to life in prison without. the possibility of parole. Period.
Get a Clue: I believe in the rule of law and the constitution, I have to look at things from both angles. After reading comments from this publication and others, I see a lynch mentality even before a jury is selected. I would hope that these same people would have the same "zeal" with other types of criminal behavior, just not going to happen.
Ray- rapists and murderers are of a different breed- even the most hardened criminals understand this. That is why people like Gardner are often murdered in prison. Someone who has raped and murdered someone should not have any rights in my opinion- they have taken the life of someone else- where's the rights of the person they murdered? Yes, we have due process and all that, but once the DNA is found and rape and murder are proven through evidence and testimony, all rights for that person should be forfeited and they should NEVER be paroled. EVER. Now, as far as sex offenders go, they really need to take statutory rape off the list (sorry to those that disagree), but let's say there is a 21 year old and a 16 year old that have sex "willingly" with each other. YES, she could have been manipulated into it and blah, blah, blah, but let's be realistic here.... a man that forceably rapes a child needs to be on a different list than a man that has consensual sex. And a man that rapes/molests a 7 year old needs a different category than a man that has consensual sex with a 16 year old. Having said that, anyone that molests, rapes, or murders children need to never see the light of day again- this will keep lots of children a lot safer- we'll have one victim instead of several.
mom of lots: Everytime a ballot measure comes up regarding sex offenders, I always vote for it but the problem is not with the law, it's how it's enforced and financed. Too many cities and counties "underfund" monitoring and enforcement of these sex offenders favoring other "pet projects" lika a new library in Fallbrook. This money could have been used to increase the funding of the county probation office which is so severely understaffed, being placed on parole is like being free once again. Now Nevada has a clause in their law, anyone who sexually abuses a child under thirteen, it's life without parole. As for murder, murder is murder, how can you toughen the sentence on this crime? You can name any law after any child but unless our governments start funding these agencies who monitor these individuals, this will happen again.
The problem is clear. The "safety" of our younger generation seems to have a price tag. Law makers seem to have the same reason/excuse. Megan (of Megan's Law) is rolling over in here grave on this one. Maybe if we all focus on "The Law of Attraction", this planet may have a chance. This law governs our planet, but the majority of it's inhabitants are oblivious to the details of this universal law. Do a google search for the "Law of Attraction". It will change you life & the planet. Thanks for reading, it's just my opinion. Hope it helps someone to understand this crazy chain of events. It helps me. Namaste'
Ray I do agree with you that the agencies that monitor sex offenders are seriously underfunded, like the probation department, as well as the District Attorney's office. They have too many cases and start cutting deals for violent sex offenders. I'll never understand how Gardner was sentenced to only six years in prison for the assault and rape of a 13 year old girl.
Ray- I was INFURIATED when they started spending $ on a library that was PERFECTLY FINE to begin with. NOW I KNOW WHY! WHAT A WASTE OF $! All of our resources need to focus on the protection of our children, not "pet projects." SO OBNOXIOUS.
Mom of Lots: I thought is was funny that the county spent so much on a new library when within a few years, the population of Fallbrook will not be able to read the books in the new library unless they are printed in Spanish. There is so much open real estate which would accomidate the library but it's not new enough or preey enough so let's spend money we don't have while other vital county agencies go unfunded like the Department of Health or the office of Probation. Another which really "busts my onions" is that virtually anyone could track these offenders but the job requirements for a county position in the probation department requires an advanced degree. I would rather hire 100 seargents than one leuitenant if I was to go into battle. Peope who are "book smart" have little or no "street smarts". Anyone can read a book and pass a test, I'm not impressed with degrees whatsoever. now let's fund the essential departments so our children don't have to be "planted" so early in life.
Ray- agreed fully. Did you notice that the community center is considering applying for a $5 mil loan to improve the center? So unnecessary and unimportant! We need this precious $ (that doesn't exist anyway)....so I guess I should instead say, we need this precious debt to go towards helping keep our children safe from dangerous sex offenders. Funny you talk about how worthless a degree is- SO TRUE! I have one and it means nothing. I graduated with high honors and couldn't even take care of a household upon graduating. Luckily I've come a long way since leaving behind the learning institutions! (Another reason I homeschool my kids.)
Ray and mom of lots, I could not agree with you more about the library project. What a colossal waste of money. It would be different if it wasn't an outdated mode of information sharing, but it is. The other library was empty all the time, why make a bigger, even more empty facility? I just don't get it. Very sad when the money could have been used in setting up safe walk home programs for kids, or anything other than a library. As for Amber, I am simply devastated that she lost her life in such a horrible manner. I am also saddened that Chelsey King did too. I have to be honest with you though, Amber was missing for so much longer than Chelsey and the focus is being placed primarily on Chelsey in the media. What happened to the outcry for Amber? Her parents suffered 50 millions times more than Chelsey's did. People need to give her as much attention as they are giving to Chelsey. It is not that I think Chelsey and her family do not deserve all the help and sympathy, but seriously.....who suffered more? Definitely Amber's family. Has that bothered anyone else or is it just me?
Check out the www - possibly using Google or Yahoo search engines and find Win-win Stress Management with Triggering Mechanisms a.k.a. Psychic Self-defense with Humanistic Alpha-wave Programming - copyright 1978 e. m. calter. Look into "Instructions" and create/start workshops/classes that would educate the individual in society (especially students) to become prepared/able to abort all crime encounters including racism, anti-Semitism and brutality coming from any segment of society (even the men/women in blue). When the conscious ego punctures due to fear and/or danger we must have placed an alpha-wave field of positive blue energy as back up (in back of the conscious yellow ego) so that we can give would-be criminals a shot of positive self-esteem at the crucial time when they're about to act out criminally. This “positive (deep) unified field process/experience” when the yellow ego goes is what allows the crime encounter to be aborted. Any crime encounter can best be described as a “negative (superficial) red unified field process/experience” (also known as crazies who snap and act out) and can be counteracted with a “positive (deep) unified field process/experience (also known as being able to save one's own butt).” This antidote is well worth investigation and implementation as well as truly being an idea whose time has come. It takes an inside job to change an outside environment in order to be safe and secure under any and all conditions, especially from all crime encounters including racism, anti-Semitism and brutality coming from any segment of society (even the men/women in blue). We can create a "blue positive (deep) unified field process/experience" from within the psyche to counteract any "red negative (superficial) unified field process/experience" coming from a crime encounter. The triggering mechanism being the yellow conscious ego being threatened, bruised and/or punctured due to fear and/or danger in the event a crime encounter presents itself. The blue alpha-wave energy must be installed behind the yellow conscious ego with the trigger in order for the “blue positive (deep) unified field process/experience” to manifest its closeness to experience. We all deserve to be safe and secure under any and all conditions. The damage/carnage that can take place in the event of a crime encounter is preventable and the experience of prevention is educational.
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who thought there was nothing wrong with the old library. Heck, the old one was only about 20 years old.
Betty #18--huh????
Today I unavoidably had to drive past the place where Amber was located. I saw the tree at that location marked with a cross and the memorial candles and flowers. Even before I got to that point in the road, my heart was heavy with sorrow and tears filling my eyes. I travel this road alot, it has always been a joyful ride for me with all the beauty of the hillsides, but today ,as it will for a long time to come, my heart burned with pain and my soul filled with rage toward the sick individual that took this little girl from her family. To know that all this time she was there when I have passed by here so many times, made me so sad. Her story has haunted me from the day she went missing. I prayed for her to be found and her wellbeing. Such a tragic loss, such senseless pain. My heart goes out to her family and friends. Amber's story will always evoke alot of heartbreak in my soul. She was not my child, I did not know her family, but their loss is ours as well.
Observer~~that had to be really tough. Thank you for sharing. I was actually thinking of driving out there to leave flowers, but didn't know if I should. Now I know that others thought the same way, I am heading to the store to buy some.
Hey--Temecula folks start looking in your own backyard for sex offenders and what organizations they attend. You might find your local yocal citizens associating with registered sex offenders and hanging on their every word.
Resident, In the Talmud, it states, "If you save one life, you save the world." Until the individual, one on one can save themselves (individually), the carnage will continue. We will finally know that we have to look at the part victims play in their victimization, and then take out that piece of the puzzle. |
