The body of 14-year-old Amber Dubois was located early Saturday morning west of Pala Temecula Road, about three miles north of historic Pala Mission and roughly 25 miles from where the brown-haired, blue-eyed teen lived. Extra counselors were on hand today at Escondido High School to help students cope with the news, administrators said. A candlelight vigil in the teen's memory was planned for this evening at the northern San Diego County secondary school, where Amber was a freshman at the time of her disappearance. "Amber has been lost to us, but she'll be remembered in the memories of our staff and students," EHS Principal Rich Watkins told reporters this morning. Authorities released few details about their investigation into the girl's death. During a news conference on Sunday afternoon, Escondido police Chief Jim Maher said only that detectives were "following a lead" when they located Amber's remains in a "very rugged and remote" locale near the Riverside County border. "Positive identification was subsequently made by the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office late Saturday afternoon by way of a dental-records comparison," Maher said. "Her parents were notified in person by Escondido and sheriff's investigators Saturday night." Maher declined to take questions from reporters, citing concerns over the possibility of compromising the investigation by releasing too much information. The case returned to widespread public attention last week following the arrest of a 30-year-old registered sex offender in connection with the disappearance and apparent slaying of 17-year-old Chelsea King of Poway, whose body was found Tuesday in a shallow grave near Lake Hodges. John Albert Gardner III -- who was ordered held without bail after pleading not guilty to raping and murdering Chelsea -- lived in Escondido when Amber disappeared. Investigators were looking into any involvement the suspect might have had with Amber or the victims of other unsolved crimes. "The Amber Dubois crime scene is still being processed and (Gardner) remains a focus of the investigation," Escondido police Lt. Craig Carter said this afternoon. Overhead views of the area shot by television news helicopters at midday showed searchers combing through heavy brush on sloping terrain near several large canopies that had been erected a short distance from a dirt road. Authorities had road access to the area fully blocked. It was in the same general locale that the remains of 7-year-old Leticia Hernandez of Oceanside were found 15 months after she disappeared from her home in 1989. Following Sunday's briefing, Amber's father, Maurice Dubois, took a moment to thank everyone who had helped search for his daughter, especially the hundreds of volunteers who donated their time and efforts weekend after weekend for much of last year "They were the most dedicated people you could ever imagine," he said. "Without them, we couldn't have done anything."

Search for Amber DuBois's body leads law enforcement to drain pond in Kit Carson Park ESCONDIDO - Law enforcement officers looking for a teenager missing for more than a year were draining a pond in Kit Carson Park today. "They got tight lips on it," San Diego County sheriff's Lt. Sylvester Washington said early today. "They told us nothing so far." Amber Dubois was 14 when she disappeared Feb. 13, 2009, while walking to Escondido High School. With the Sunday arrest of registered sex offender John Albert Gardner III in the death of 17-year-old Chelsea King, who was found in a shallow grave along the south shore of Lake Hodges, law enforcement officers followed up on a tip in Amber's case. Some children told their parents that in May they saw a black plastic bag, with what appeared to be human hair around it, in Kit Carson Park, which is about 2 miles from where Chelsea's body was found. Law enforcement officers found the bag or a similar one Friday, but nothing but some mud was found inside, according to reports from the scene. Nonetheless, the bag was turned over to the FBI for analysis. Gardner, who is suspected in a Dec. 27 attack on a woman in Rancho Bernardo Community Park, lived in Escondido at the time Amber disappeared. Riverside County sheriff's deputies are also investigating him in connection with an attempted abduction in Lake Elsinore in October. Gardner was living in Lake Elsinore when he was arrested, though his mother has a house in Rancho Bernardo. In 2000, he pleaded guilty to molesting a 13-year-old neighbor girl in Rancho Bernardo and was given a six-year sentence. He was registered in LE in January of 2010. I am sure he lived at his moms house in RB but she didnt want anyone to know he was a RSO. I think she is partly at fault.

Why does every one keep writing that Amber was walking to Escondido High School? That High School is north of Escondido and Kit Carson Park is on the south end of Escondido. San Pasqual High School is directly across the street from Kit Carson Park.

I have been haunted by Amber's disappearance, my heart goes out to her family. I pray for this to be resolved and that she is found soon. Nothing has been mentioned of anyone searching for Amber around Dixon Lake - that seems to be the nearest wooded area to her high school. If the monster that killed Chelsea is involved it seems his pattern is to take them somewhere secuded. It wouldnt make sense for him to travel to Kit Carson Park - not that this monster would make any sense at all anyway but its worth a shot.
We may never find Amber however, we can find a change in the law that would make preditory crimes against children a one strike law. With a 25 to life status for first time offenders. Write your represenatives, as I have, as soon as you read this and demand change.
I agree, there are a lot of places in Lake Elsinore, especially the side he lived on.....these monsters are strange things....why would he move here? Doesn't say he worked anywhere......he was looking for an area where he wouldn't be noticed and if he disposed of a body here and didn't get caught......then he would feel safer. Well I.C.Ekim- they have come out and said there is DNA evidence to prove him guilty of at least rape. He has already been in jail once for molesting a 13yr old girl..Personally I think a one strike law would be in order - except 30yrs -forget that- he should be put down. Men that prey on young children do not need to exist in our society - call it what you want- i don't feel the need to house and feed an individual for a wasted life, an animal that finds no issue in preying on young children, boys or girls. We need to clear out our prison system and start eliminating these 'deviants'. They do not exist except to cause others pain, they do not need to exist.

I.C.Ekim- Facts do not lie and do not have a face. Fact #1- Gardner is a registered sex offender in Lake Elsinore, meaning he is supposed to live in Lake Elsinore, otherwise, what's the point of registering? Fact #2- his mom and step-dad are aware that their son is a registered sex offender in Lake Elsinore. Fact #3- Gardner's parents live too close to a school for their son to register at their address. Fact #4- Gardner's parents allow their son to live with them, depsite that he is registered as residing in Lake Elsinore, going against the law "too close to a school". Fact #5- now we have Gardner where he shouldn't be - staying at his parents' house in a city he is unregistered at too close to a school. Fact #6- this leaves those around Gardner especially vulnerable to him because no one around his parents' house realize they are housing a sex offender because he is not coming up on the registry in their city. Fact #7- his parents should not harbor a registered sex offender (even if it is their own son) knowingly and put their community at risk. So what could they have done? If they insisted on having their son stay with them, they could have had him stay at home with them and if he felt the need to be out of his parents' home for a time being, then his parents should have sent him on back to Elsinore where he is registered. I believe his parents were negligent. I also do not need to know his parents or Gardner to know these facts. I do not need to know Gardner to know that his DNA was found at the scene of the crime against Chelsea. Can you imagine if law enforcement, judges and investigators had to know the perpetrators and the victims before making decisions and finding facts? Justice would not prevail and more people would be murdered and hurt.
This man deserves what he has done to these poor girls.. No, he deserves far worse. It was a mistake to let him go the first time. Any sick person who decides to rape a 13 year old let alone any girl should never walk this earth. My prayers go out.
I have two daughters. I cannot begin to imagine her parents grief. I am crying as I write this. I hope they find her killer so this person cannot do this again. There will never be enough 'justice' in our system, even if we hung him, or shot him, or tortured him till he died. They alone must ultimately find a way to deal with their grief, and they will never fully get 'over it'. You can replace material goods, but you cannot replace loved ones. My hopes to you in finding peace.

I cannot apologize for having absolutely NO compassion or forgiveness towards the individual responsible for these two precious angel's death's. They say Amber was found in area that was difficult to get into. So,that tells me that someone knew that area well. But who??? It is very sad to hear of the outcome. I was hoping that it might turn out like Elizabeth Smart's case.My deepest sympathies go out to Amber's grandmothers and to her parents Carrie and Maurice Dubois. Are people allowed to hunt on a Indian Reservation???

Everyone is jumping to conclusions, remember folks, innocent until proven guilty. The area where Amber was found is close to the Pala gun range, SR-76 and a road used by smugglers, Rancho Temecula Road. Reminds me of the Mc Martin trial back in the 1980's and look what happened, hysteria, child molesters under every rock. If the killer of Chelsea is going to meet his fate, folks don't compromise the potential jury pool by jumping to conclusions otherwise his attorney will get what he wants, a moved trial. In my personal opinion though, I think he did it and "copped" a deal "not" to get the death penalty in exchange for the location of Amber's remains. Let's see what the media says in the coming week.
there is so much heat on the police in this case that 5am friday they transfered gardner out of down town jail over to the fedral building....in which they flew in him in a helicoptor, in which amber body was found in pala....so as bad as our legal system has screwed up, they got closure for one set of parents.....now they should drive him to the desert and let both dads have there way.....
The term 'guilty until proven innocent' applies only to a court room. As a parent I have the responsibility to judge you immediately! No jury, judge, or lawyers will determine who is qualified or 'safe' for my children. If I have the slightest inkling that you are a danger, regardless of how slight, you will not have access to my kids, period. This is why information is so critical to parents. The web-site that posts convicted child molester information is a very useful tool for parents. Save your, 'innocent until proven guilty' garbage for TV crime shows. Real life doesn't work that way!
Since I moved from the "friendly barrio" to an undisclosed location, on Saturday, I had to take the role of parent to someone elses children. I caught these high school students (4) smokeing "crack" in their vehicle. Needless to say, they went to "juvie" despite the "carping of their parents when SDSO "hooked them up" and towed their vehicle. Now it's not the 50's, 60's or 70's, parents today "assume" everything is fine in "hooterville" and turn their kids loose without any restrictions, than when something happens, they turn into vigilantes. I grew up in a dangerous area, I maintained my safety and survived. Maybe you Fallbrookians or "hillies" might be as "rough" on me regarding my stun gun and pepper spray as you were last year. By the way, the local news is running a segment on such defensive devices. GEEZ..... I love redemption.
Additional: Reality, I honestly can't blame you on your feelings. I was trained to look at things in a "legal" standpoint. Maybe I got hard as I got older but I still think that "we" should let the judicial process run it's course and not become vigilantes. Just my opinion.

I believe it is a foregone conclusion that he killed Chelsea King. DNA doesn't lie. I am not so certain what his connection is to Amber Dubois. She was seen walking with a tall, dark-skinned young man that morning. Gardner is not dark-skinned. Regarding Gardner's parents, give them a break. He lied through his teeth about what happened with the 13-year old girl. His lie was backed up by the fact that the girl recanted her rape charges (although he did beat her and molest her). That gave him the ammunition he needed to convince his family he was telling the truth about not raping her. He told them that he pled guilty to make it easier on the family. Did you listen to the interview with John/Ken, with his relative? Very sickening to hear, but understandable how his family believed in his innocence. What mother would not protect a son that she thought was unjustly charged for a sex crime? He is a sickening pig and got got away with lying to his family. But think about it and your child, wouldn't you believe them too? I am not defending the jerk, because he is a horrible monster, but I get why his family "harbored" him. They did not think he did anything and thought he was innocent. Regarding Amber. All the reports I have seen said this lead was first picked up in August 2009, and the family hired cadaver dogs to go out and investigate. They dogs "hit" on something out there, but the lead Escondido detective on the case did nothing about it and just ignored the hit. I believe that because of the Chelsea King case, the FBI, and Sheriff's departments got involved and opened back up what was seemingly a cold case. They followed up on the lead from ten months ago in Kit Carson park, and then followed up on the lead from six months ago with the cadaver dog hit in Pala. That is how she was found. The big question is, who turned in that original lead in August about the Pala deal? That is where everyone needs to look. Perhaps it was Gardner, but because the leads were from so long ago, it could have been anyone. The leads were FINALLY adequately followed up on and that is what has solved this case. This time the outside investigators brought out cadaver dogs again and the FBI paid attention to it. I just don't want to rush to judgment and assume it is Gardner, when there could be an equally sick monster still out there laughing at all of us for making that assumption. Here is a question that I have. Have you looked at the pics of the crime scene? Since when does that look remote? It is right next to a paved road. It doesn't look remote at all, perhaps an overgrowth of bushes, but not remote. One of the TV stations had their reporter standing by the yellow crime scene tape and cars were just whipping by. How is that remote?
I wanted to add two more things. Do you remember when Amber was originally kidnapped. Her cell phone was turned on briefly on Saturday and someone tried to access her voice mail. That action pinged off cell phone towers in Escondido. So, whomever killed her was in Escondido the day after they kidnapped her. How accurate is that ping and does it pinpoint the exact location of the cell phone useage. Also, let's just pray that some of her clothing was found at the scene and there is DNA left on that clothing.
Ray, I don't understand your point regarding how I am just like him? I am not condoning a lynch mob, nor am I accusing him. What I am saying is that as a parent I have the responsibility to guard my children. I have the responsibility to know who my neighbors are and what their backgrounds are. AND I have the right to hold people accountable for past accusations, regardless of if the legal system says they are innocent. 99% of the time you CAN judge a book by its cover. As far as my family is concerned, I'm willing to risk upsetting the remaining 1% to keep my children safe. Let our legal system run its course. The outcome will be what it is. Based on the information I have (true or not), I would NEVER let this man be around my family.
when the original story of the disappearance of Chelsea King was published on this site, there were numerous posts... along with those post ,was one by an individual, that said to "look in Pala" for the bodies of these two girls... couldnt this individual be the one the "perp" the took Amber? This post was almost 5 days before the authorities went back to Pala. question? who was that "perp" and how did know to post the search site before Amber was found?
I just realized that in my first post I inverted two very important words. It should have read 'Innocent until proven Guilty only works in the Court Room', in the first sentence.
Reality: Everyone is entitled to their day in court, Miranda, Escobedo and our constitution says so. Judging a book by it's cover? how many times I have been "thrashed" by doing the same with "border hoppers" and I get no justice but I am correct about the same percentage, depends on who is the judge. I know you have feelings on this issue, so do I but I let the judicial system deal with it. I do cry for the victimw, I'm not a cold and heartless individual.
Reality: I have been treated "unfairly" in the media and by Fallbrookians because of my stance, beliefs and a recent arrest for nothing I did illegally, I received no consideration, just abuse. As I stated, innocent until proven guilty, a prevledge I never got, and all but one of my charges were dismissed, a low grade misdemeanor, but did Fallbrook let me off the hook? hardly. Manson would have been treated better so if I have doubts about people's views on this subject, I just look at the law and our constitution, works for me.
Just Sayin'~that is what struck me when they announced the location where Amber was found. As I recall, someone questioned why the person mentioned Pala when the search was centered miles from there and the response was "it was remote..". Someone was very perceptive.
After reading all #48 of the comments, why not make a cross and nail him to it. That is what I mean about being innocent until proven guilty and letting the judicial system work. Tom Metzger would be proud, cross burning in lawns, better yet an old fashioned lynching.

unless there was another article with another comment thread there was a person here saying to "look in Pechanga area" not Pala. I remember because I live across the street from Pechanga and I replied to them because I was annoyed that she (Aniball I think it was) was throwing out wild guesses on where to search. I guess she wasn't too far off though since Amber was found just a few miles of here. I think the article is still in the archives.

I think alot of us are hoping that Gardner is guilty for Ambers death because the thought of another sick individual out there loose is too much to deal with. Either way his guilt for Chelsea's death is enough to warrant our wrath and then some.

I just mapquested from Pechanga to Arouba Rd (I saw this exact tree and road on mapquest so that's how I got Arouba rd) and it is around 3 miles. Now why would Annibal out of all of the Southern California area throw out this one area to search.

It's weird too that her body was found by where Leticia Hernandez body was found 21 years ago. Very bizarre. I hope the investigators are looking into the person who gave them the lead to Pala and talking to that person. I will bet they did not get DNA from Leticia because it was so long ago. Too bad, might have been the same person.

Like Old Dehesa Road where they found Danielle Van Dam. It was near Singing Hills Casino.That's in El Cajon ,right???So, I wonder who in Riverside makes trips back and forth from El Cajon to Temecula???And I read somewhere that there is a shooting range back there. I can understand what Annibal and Misha are saying. She just believes that there is a connection to these cases. she is like a hound dog that can't let go of the bone.What the connection is,who knows ,but there are different variables. For instance Feb.25 is somebody's birthday. Certain people are aware of what this birthday means. And she feels that someone in Riverside County is connected to this and has this knowlege. There was no way that she would ever know that Pala was close to Pechanga. She has never been there. But it is pretty close to what she has been saying. How was it that it was so convenient that Danielle wound up on Dehesa Road in an isolated area and is 25 miles from Poway. and than Amber winds up in Pala which is about 25 miles from Escondido.That is a connection.So what is the common factor here. Poway. Poway High School and Escondido High School. There was a 9 year old boy who witnessed something back in 2002. His mother told him it was okay to lie because it was inevitable that this would happen to his sister. He is 17 now. Can you imagine what kind of guilt he is suppressing in his psyche,what he struggles with on a day to day basis.I am sure he has night mares.. I am sure he is having behavior problems. I am sure he has severe anger issues and his mother has never taken him to counseling. I am sure he is very popular,I just feel he is a ticking time bomb.He loves internet games .She just can't help wondering who was Chelsea peer tutoring In Poway High School.???I know what peer tutoring is.And John Gardner let alot of older teenagers in his home. His mother works for Mental Health as a administrator. Maybe someone in her office did help this young man(the 17 year old) and maybe she reported the tip. now can you understand what Misha is trying to say.???Maybe he confided in John Gardner. And Amber had alot of friends on the internet. Maybe he and the one who lives in Riverside was communicating with her.Amber was probably telling everybody how she was getting a baby lamb and her love for wolves. She also knows that people who have done these heinous crimes like to go back to the drop off site. They live in a fantasy land . They can keep an eye on the victim they hurt. It builds there ego up. It is like collecting in a sense.The perpetrator lives off this rush. Like the movie"Where Sleeping Dogs Lie".I am sure that someone in LE is reading these comments. And somebody will understand what Misha is saying.Also the person in Riverside may have connections to Washington State. Chelsea wanted to go to the University of Washington she was accepted there.I believe that these cases are connected.
For GodSake, Annibal. Misha, and now Evie - you folks write like we (the average citizen ) should know whatever it is you are talking about. We don't. We only know Gardner was caught. If there is more to this story, are you contacting the athourities or are you going to continue to play this game with this publication? It isn't right to do so. I for one do not feel your cryptic comments do any good here. They mean nothing. If you folks feel they mean something then go to the investigators and tell your story. Either that or make your assertions more clear. You all are talking in circles.
To i.c.ikum: Gardner has already had his day in court and thanks to a moronic prosecutor and a liberal judge he received a 5 year slap on the wrist in spite of the fact that a court appointed psychiatrist told them he was a danger to society, as far as I am concerned the blood of Chlsea King and possibly Amber Dubois is on their hands as well as his. His parents knew what he was and harbored him amyway. You can defend him all you want and let your bleeding heart just gush all over the place about lynch mobs but unless we change our so called laws to help the victims of crimes rather than the perpetrators more and more of these animals will be let out on the streets to rape and murder innocent children. Let us hope that the deaths of these two lovely young girls will cause a change in our current liberal system that gives more rights to criminals than it does to their victims or we are likely to see a return to "vigilante justice".

It is someone that knows David Westerfield.He helped sealed his fate in San Quentin.It was a sham of a case. He deserves a new trial.People were running out of Sabre Springs,alot of people had moved to Escondido.It was a different area code.Certain people who were attached to the case were harassing people. They would get right up in your face!!!!They even went after me.I am aware of who they are. They are very aggressive. People open your eyes,I still feel you have a killer loose !!!Keep an eye on your children and your daughters and sons.I remember what Brenda had said when Amber went missing. Is this happening again.??? I wonder what she said when Chelsea went missing. Since she has a family member who goes to Poway High School.

Regarding comment #52, I would suggest exactly that. Let's do it like the used to; have a trial and if he is found guilty let's crucify him in public. That would certainly be a deterrent to future scuzbags. Ray ignorantly ignores the history behind public executions. They were used as DETERRENTS! and they worked. Jesus was put on trial multiple times prior to his execution. The fact that those trials were a sham and a farce does nothing to alter that fact. Under the then legal system he received a fair punishment. Laws and the legal system don't always work! As a devout Christian, I am very thankful that Jesus died willingly. Corporal punishment should be ugly and brutal by design, and it serves an important roll in society. And the law doesn't protect everyone. BUT in today's society the law seems to protect the criminals a lot more than the victims. And that is WRONG!
In reference to the Village News alerting the authorities to comments made by Annibal/Misha (which definitely are supicious and I questioned also), I am surmising whomever peruses and approves these postings surely would have alerted Julie Reeder and she in turn would have notified the proper authorities. Now I'm going to post MY opinion and this is strictly MINE. Unless any of you have had a child molested, raped or murdered, you CANNOT feel the magnitude of anger and hurt, the rage to rip someones head off, blow them away or better yet, do the most inhumane acts you can possibly imagine on that person! You DO NOT understand the ripple effect this human piece of fecal matter has on your child, your family, friends not to mention yourself FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE! You DO NOT understand the obsurdity of our judicial system and how the victim is punished emotionally and sometimes physically, every single day of their lives, and yet, the pervert is given 'easy street' even when found guilty! John Gardner is guilty of at least Chelsea - that's a given. That alone consititutes the death penalty. There's no way in hell I want my tax dollars to pay for him to continue living in prison the rest of his evil life. Our laws HAVE to change and I know this is going to upset people, but remember this is MY post. 1. Not only should the judge and defending attorney for Gardner be held accountable in the previous sentencing when they were told by the psyhcologist he was a threat to society. 2. I believe whatever crime the person has done should be done to him/her by the family of the victim REPEATEDLY...YES, TORTURE! This DOES NOT put them in the same category as the offender...I'm sure God would understand! 3. I HATE that our judicial system allows such light sentences to continue and not make it harder for the offenders on the outside once the law decides they are 'rehibilitated'. WAKE UP PEOPLE - THEY ARE NEVER REHIBILITATED!!! ISN'T GARDNER ENOUGH PROOF OF THAT???!!!! 4. They should have penial casteration on public television broadcast across the nation on every channel, every hour, for at least a week straight, no anestesia, no medical help afterwards - you would see an immediate change in our society! It galls me that Chelsea had to die to find Amber...I do hope more cases are reopened and others that are missing are found (hopefully not dead). My heart is aching for these families and my prayers go out to both of them. God help us if we don't start enforcing stricter laws and punishment! It's only going to get worse!
Ellie- I know this is another absurd part of our judicial system, but did you know that it costs MORE of our tax $ to give someone the death penalty than to put them in prison for life? This is due to the costly court processes of automatic appeals given to the perpetrator. I HATE it...it's like a 3 ring circus.
MOM OF LOTS: A bullet is real cheap! Once found guilty, BOOM! a shot to the head! How much does that cost? No pomp, no glory, no ceremony, and if it makes the family feel better, let the father/mother do it!
Ellie- it would be much easier that way and far less people would perpetrate children if there was something to be afraid of. But no, they receive cart blanc, respect, food, shelter, warmth, privacy, quiet, respite, cleanliness, warm showers, food brought to them 3 xs per day, sleep, anything they need and have a "right" to. Very very backwards. I jokingly said to my husband that I think I'd enjoy solitary confinement and zero responsiblities and everything brought to me for at least a while!
ELLIE, Ok, I could not agree with you more. Annibal/Misha/Evie/Anonymous are obviously all the same person. Something is not right. I could not agree with you and OBSERVER more. The rambling, the circles, none of the posts even make sense, yet their knowledge of supposed details that none of us should know, or alluding to details that seem like too big a coincidence (searching that road), bothers me a great deal. Something is seriously wrong with those posts. Either this person is a psychic, or they are crazy and need to be reported to the police. If they would stop talking in circles, maybe someone here would get what they are trying to say. They tried in vain four times to make their point through Annibal, Misha, Evie, then anonymous, but still none of it flowed and it was IMPOSSIBLE to comprehend the point of the post.
