We must stop Merriam Mountains project

Thursday, March 4th, 2010
Issue 09, Volume 14.

The Merriam Mountains project threatens to set a dangerous precedent in San Diego.

After nearly a decade of controversy, the project will return to the County Board of Supervisors for a final vote on March 24.

If approved, the 2,700-unit Merriam Mountains will destroy a predominantly rural and agricultural area of North San Diego. The project will add more than 35,000 daily trips to our roads and use more than one million gallons of water per day at a time when we are being mandated to reduce water consumption. Yet, when Supervisor Horn, a vocal supporter of the project, recently met with farmers at the San Diego County Farm Bureau to discuss zoning changes, he probably failed to mention the additional 12 projects being planned Advertisement

along I-15 north of SR-78. If developed, these projects would total approximately 9,193 dwelling units with 30,000 people. That’s a big increase in water demand that’s likely to impact existing residents and local agricultural land users. Additionally, the Deer Springs Fire Protection District has twice rejected the project’s fire protection plans because they severely compromise the region’s safety, and several planning and sponsor groups are opposed to the project.

We must stop this project!

Please attend the County Supervisors hearing on March 24 and speak in opposition to the project and/or write a letter to the board asking them to reject Merriam Mountains once and for all.

Don’t allow Merriam Mountains to pave the road for more poor planning and massive development in the county.

Don't worry. The economy will implode and it will never get built.

Horn is up for re-election. I know it pains me to say this but vote for anyone, left or right, except horn. Let's send "tubby" back to Valley Center. You folks had the chance missed last election cycle but squndered the opportunity to retire the "Rahm Emmanuel" of San Diego County along with his "ward boss" style of patronage, favors and back room corruption to the history books. Think before you vote this time. Do you want to keep "chubby tubby" for another four years or do you want progress? Vote wisely this time.

UPDATE: KGTV and the SDUT reports that our "ward boss" Bill Horn made inappropriate contacts by cellular phone records to the developers of the Marriam Mountain Project days prior to the vote which is a violation of the law. The county has departments which deal with the day to day contacts with applicants, why would Horn call? Marriam Mountain a.k.a. Hornville just shows how deep the corruption goes in "tubby's" office. Scandal after scandal and Horn remains screwing the citizens in the fifth district and lining his pockets. Remember the scandal over his Carlsbad property and accusation of infidelity with his chief of staff? Are we going to take another four more years of Horn or are we going to say enough and send him home to retire? It's up to you, how you vote this time makes the difference. Last election cycle, we had a chance with Bruce Thompson but Horn won by a slim margin, not his usual 20 points, I think it was 4 points so we have a good chance of saying goodbye to "chubby tubby".
