Camp Pendleton libraries are currently offering Preschool Story Time, a free program that helps children learn more about literacy in a safe and caring environment.

The program consists of organized sessions that include book and poetry readings, sing-alongs, arts and crafts and other literacy-related activities that allow children to interact with each other and form early friendships.

"Research shows that six pre-reading skills must be acquired before a child can learn to read," said Barbara Giberson, children’s department librarian, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton libraries. "Preschool Story Time helps children develop many of these early literacy skills."

The program is aimed at children from ages two to five and requires that a parent or caregiver accompany the children during sessions.

"By capturing a child’s interest and imagination early, the program helps children discover that libraries and literacy can be an enjoyable and a valued part of their lives," said Giberson. "Programs like Advertisement

Newhouse Legal Document Services Preschool Story Time have been on base dating back as far as 1975."

The sessions take place weekly at all three Camp Pendleton libraries.

"Having the library close-by makes it a lot easier to bring the kids," said Sara Williams, a Marine spouse who attends the South Mesa library two-to-three times a week. "My kids and I enjoy these sessions a lot."

Preschool Story Time is only one of the many programs held by Camp Pendleton libraries.

A monthly Pajama Story Time is also offered, in which children wear their pajamas and come to the library to hear bedtime stories.

The library also provides an action-packed reading program for children of all ages in efforts to encourage them to read and enjoy the library over the summer break.
