Issue 04, Volume 14.

CAMP PENDLETON - Due to ongoing construction at the main gate, the traffic pattern for entering the base through the gate will be altered starting Feb. 1.

The base will maintain three inspection points, as per normal operating procedures, but motorists entering the base will travel an alternate route to these inspection points. The inspection points have been placed in a location to reduce traffic backups and lengthen the queue on base rather than out in town.

Once motorists enter the base through the main gate, two lanes will be diverted to the right and proceed behind the new guard shack and then be routed back onto Vandegrift Boulevard.

During rush hour, one additional lane will proceed straight through the main gate and will be a left turn only lane into Del Mar.

maintain an appropriate security posture while reducing potential traffic problems that could impact the neighboring communities and the off ramp on I-5. This new phase of construction is expected to continue through July 2010.

Commuters may experience traffic delays during this period, which could cause additional traffic backups that could potentially impact local communities.

Camp Pendleton officials have taken all possible steps to mitigate negative effects during construction. These steps include additional on-base traffic modifications during peak hours which are designed to further mitigate off-base effects.

The end result of this front gate enhancement is to improve force protection for the base and minimize the impact of main gate traffic on our neighboring communities.

The base commander would like to thank both base residents and the surrounding communities for their patience and support.

while they are at it, why not open a nother back gate for all those folks who live in Temecula to use. That way they won't drive behind Albertson in the delievery area, or through Fallbrook at all.

Hope NWS Fallbrook Gate gets the same makeover soon to alleviate the backup onto Mission Rd, and Alturas from 6 AM to 8 AM. School buses are stuck in this as are workers trying to get to their employment on these roads. Also nearly every week a motorcycle goes down because white-lining is allowed in town, but is not tolerated on base.

Red, excellent idea - I have suggested to NWS that they open the northern gate during rush hour - if only for uniformed Military personnel even - so far no response.
The problem is not the gate - that moves fairly fast - it is all the roads that lead to the gate - and all the merging that place.

I live in that neighborhood, and the traffic is extremely heightened through the neighborhood during peak hours...on Fallbrook St, Alturas, even Wisconsin, Ammunition and some mornings Sancado Terrace. It's my understanding that the problem isn't the NWS, but the city council...who in the "traffic studies" has determined that the traffic flow is not significantly increased due to the base traffic on and off to do anything about it.

I think the base should construct a road from Temecula/Murrieta through the hills to the base and avoid Fallbrook completely. It would free up our roads, and there would be less accidents.

I believe fallbrook resident hit the nail on the head. There needs to be an access road built from the Riverside area directly to Camp Pendleton through the hills and valleys. The base has been there a long time and I don't see it closing anytime in the near future. Not only are there many Marines stationed at the base, but more and more civilians are being contracted to work alongside the Marines and in place of Marines. The traffic will only continue to get worse. I know personally that many of the Marines are now buying houses in the Temecula/Riverside and north/northeast of Riverside area because the houses are more affordable for them the further north they travel. Then they make the daily commute to base, continually adding to the congestion of the funnel at the Fallbrook gate.

Yes let's add more gates. The Marine/Civilian Police aren't spread out enough. Just run a road from Temecula through the Northeast side of the the base. Oh, wait what's that big area called...oh yeah the impact area. Great idea.

There is construction all over Camp Pendleton!!! The gate at the NWS Fallbrook is HORRIBLE and really should have been considered to be overhauled!!!

After speaking with the "director" of NWS fallbrook personally over traffic issues I can say without a doubt that part of the issue is that the man is rather arrogant (and a liar) with no desire to improve the traffic situation. It's also quite strange to me that a civilian has been in charge of a Navy base for almost 10 years. Smells of blatant cronyism to me.
After traveling this route for over 5 years I have determined through careful analysis that the traffic problem is due to a 100% I.d. check, and only two gate guards/lanes with merges required on both ends. Never mind the fact that to get into any "secure" area of NWS fallbrook you have to pass through yet another checkpoint which essentially makes the initial I.D. check a pointless redundancy.
To make matters worse, the morons in charge have prohibited motorcycle lane sharing and bicycle traffic through the stretch. Both of which would significantly reduce travel time (motorcycle travel outbound especially) and traffic as more users are encouraged to use these modes of transport.
The thing that gets me the most is that there's potentially billions in construction projects going on right now on Camp Pen. These are presumably to support the increase in the number of Marines and consequently civilian personnel on the base.
Despite all this there has been essentially no change to the basic transportation infrastructure of the base. 50,000 Marines+ untold number of civilians on Camp Pendleton and there are essentially 3 main gates to enter and exit the most densely packed area of the base every morning. I have been on bases the size of the Camp Pendleton Air Station with better access.

All of this adds up to a traffic infrastructure nightmare with the Fallbrook gate being the most glaring example.
A gate straight in from Riverside county would most certainly be the right course of action but unfortunately the area that it would run through is inhabited by rich people. They will never let that happen.
So the poor people who live next to the Fallbrook gate will continue to suffer with the traffic and the localized air pollution of thousands of cars sitting parked right outside their apartment windows.

Ultimately the question to ask is whether or not you really thought the Military Industrial complex would let BRAC (closing of tustin, el toro etc) cramp their style. Judging by the growth of Camp Pendleton to compensate I think it's fair to say that they figured out a work-around
