National pickleball tournament draws locals

BUCKEYE, Ariz.- The first national pickleball tournament sponsored by the USA Pickleball Association was held November 2-8 at Sun City Festival in Buckeye, Ariz. Over 400 athletes from 26 states and Canadian provinces participated.The youngest athlete was 10 years old and the most senior was 85 years old. This was the largest pickleball tournament ever.

The following are the San Diego County players who medaled. Overall, six gold, 11 silver and seven bronze medals were won by local pickleball players.

"We are especially proud of Gail Penacho, one of our players who medaled in all five events she entered," said Beverly Youngren, ambassador for USA Pickleball Association. "She won silver in Open Women’s Doubles and a bronze in Open Women’s Singles."

"Our North County Picklers group won as many medals as some of the larger clubs," said Youngren. "We have about 150 members. Some clubs have over 1,000 in their membership. This was truly an awesome achievement!"
