Congressman Issa, does my reality interfere with your philosophy?

Elaine May once said, "I much prefer a moral dilemma to a real one." Our Congressman Darrell Issa is having a moral dilemma: any constructive plans to get the American people out the economic mess we’re now struggling with is rejected because it is contrary to Republican orthodox "philosophy." We’ve seen the fruits of this philosophy, which consists of deregulation, trickledown, tax cuts for the wealthy, capital gains tax cuts, one-time handouts and more tax cuts. Given our recent experience, to say that his "philosophy" doesn’t work grossly overstates its efficacy.

On the other hand, most of the rest of us are having a real dilemma trying to stand firm on an economy that is quicksand. Congressman "Just Say No" Issa is wringing his hands because the Recovery Bill is imperfect. People who are paralyzed waiting for the perfect are likely to still be living in their mom’s basement at the age of 47. We need you to act, Congressman Issa!

BTW, did you catch Issa embarrassing himself on David Schuster’s show ranting about the Recovery Bill’s non-existent "Train to Sin City" project? A philosophy is not supposed to be a soothing intellectual construct signifying nothing. It’s an attempt to capture reality in a system of rational thought. When a philosophy demonstrably fails the real world test, it has to be scrapped. Otherwise it’s not a philosophy; it’s just blind faith.

Another group Issa seems willing to throw under the bus are disabled veterans. Issa's voting record on supporting this issue is among the worst in congress. When will Camp Pendleton wake up and stop re-electing this "just say no to all government funding" official.

He doesn't represent the people of the district, he represents a fail economic policy that favors multi-national corporations, their shareholders, and their executives.

Wow Anna please check your facts. "...about the Recovery Bill's non-existant "Train to Sin City" project." This is a verifiable fact. This train is supposed to go from Aneheim to Las Vegas. Only thing is an EIR and other impact reports will draw this out for years and the costs for these reports will do nothing but create paperwork and supply a job for some poor County Worker.

There is a proposal for something like you describe, (it's LA not Anaheim) that's been around a long time. But, it's not got anything to do with the Recovery Bill.

What is in the Recovery Bill is $8 billion that is allocated to the Secretary of Transportation for high-speed rail development. It will be up to the Department of Transportation to determine how it is spent, among various competing projects (including a line that will run from Baton Rouge to New Orleans, being pushed by Republican Gov. Jindal). And, by the way, the Secretary of Transportation is Ray LaHood, a Republican.

Sooner or later you will realize that you cannot trust anything that comes out of Faux News or most of what comes out of Republican talking heads. Here is the exact text of the bill:

FEDERAL RAILROAD ADMINISTRATION

CAPITAL ASSISTANCE FOR HIGH SPEED RAIL CORRIDORS AND INTERCITY PASSENGER RAIL SERVICE

For an additional amount for section 501 of Public Law 110–432 and discretionary grants to States to pay for the cost of projects described in paragraphs (2)(A) and (2)(B) of section 24401 of title 49, United States Code, subsection (b) of section 24105 of such title, $8,000,000,000, to remain available through September 30, 2012: Provided, That the Secretary of Transportation shall give priority to projects that support the development of intercity high speed rail service: Provided further, That within 60 days of the enactment of this Act, the Secretary shall submit to the House and Senate Committees on Appropriations a strategic plan that describes how the Secretary will use the funding provided under this heading to improve and deploy high speed passenger rail systems: Provided further, That within 120 days of enactment of this Act, the Secretary shall issue interim guidance to applicants covering grant terms, conditions, and procedures until final regulations are issued: Provided further, That such interim guidance shall provide separate instructions for the high speed rail corridor program, capital assistance for intercity passenger rail service grants, and congestion grants: Provided further, That the Secretary shall waive the requirement that a project conducted using funds provided under this heading be in a State rail plan developed under chapter 227 of title 49, United States Code: Provided further, That the Federal share payable of the costs for which a grant is made under this heading shall be, at the option of the recipient, up to 100 percent: Provided further, That projects conducted using funds provided under this heading must comply with the requirements of subchapter IV of chapter 31 of title 40, United States Code: Provided further, That section 24405 of title 49, United States Code, shall apply to funds provided under this heading: Provided further, That the Administrator of the Federal Railroad Administration may retain up to one-quarter of 1 percent of the funds provided under this heading to fund the award and oversight by the Administrator of grants made under this heading, and funds retained for said purposes shall remain available through September 30, 2014.

When you said that the Recovery Bill funding for the "Train to Sin City" project was a verifiable fact, what reality was that a part of? We are all entitled to our own opinions, but not our own facts.

I found no such reference in the Recovery Bill. And for your education I provided the appropriate section of the bill in its entirety.

This is another example of people listening to right-wing media, thinking they know something without check the facts for themselves, and then looking like a fool in public when they repeat the lies.

A common response to being confronted with the truth is to go completely silent.

Defend yourself, if you can. And without changing the subject - please.

It's a pretty sad state of affairs when people buy the nonsense Rush, Sean and Billo are selling. As Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele said before he was forced to retract it, Rush is an entertainer. Well, I think he's a big fat idiot, but some seem to think he's just peachy.

As for our beloved Congressman Issa, is there any way we could trade him for Congressman Filner. Filner's staff actually treats you like a constituent when you call or visit his office. And Filner's actions as chairman of Veteran's Affairs shows he truly cares about our veterans.

Gentlemen, I can tell you this, whether it is a Republican or Democrat, they do not care about you the constituent. Where have you been? There are evils on both sides, if not Bill O, then its Rachel Maddow.... whats the difference? Issa or Waxman, what's the difference. They all think they know better than we the people. The bailout bill just passed just gave the liberals their dream money for their programs, not to mention the last year of unabided spending by the so-called fiscal conservative Republicans. This country is now the Divided States of American with two completely distinct factions of the government only because we lack solid honest statesmen who think of America first and party second and are not trying to climb the political ladder for their greed of money and power.
