Interested in learning how to use eBay?

How many times have we heard friends and family say they bought or sold something on eBay – stories of people making tidy sums of money by selling unused items found in and around their homes, while others claim that there is an abundance of great deals just waiting to be found?

Some regular eBay buyers and sellers make a living off their earnings. Words like "PayPal," "auction bidding," "reserve," "Buy it Now" and even "eBay" itself can be intimidating to first-time users.

What exactly is eBay? It is an American auction and shopping Web site where people and businesses buy and sell goods and services worldwide. These items can be new or used.

eBay Inc. also owns PayPal, a protected Web site that enables buyers and businesses to send and receive money online.

Buying and selling on eBay is actually a breeze. Recently I made my first large purchase on the site: a 1936 Ford Coupe.

After asking the seller numerous questions, my husband decided this was the car for him. I have to admit, clicking "Place Bid" made me a bit nervous, but the end result was positive.

I will say that when the car arrived and was taken off the car carrier I was a bit stunned to see that it was exactly as described by the seller. Not bad for my first purchase.

To get started, all one needs to do is register to become an eBay member. The next step is to sign up for PayPal.

PayPal is a free service that protects your credit card and banking information. It’s fast, easy to use, private and secure. PayPal’s buyer protection for a qualified listing on eBay provides free coverage up to $2,000.

Registering for these sites is quick and easy.

If you ever have questions or get stuck on something you can go to eBay University Learning Center, which is found in the upper righthand corner. The easy-to-understand tutorials found at the center guide you every step of the way and answer many questions.

Now you are ready to buy and sell on eBay.

Before starting your eBay experience, research items to be purchased or sold. By thoroughly researching items, you can determine what price you would expect to sell an item for.

Use the search box at the top of an eBay page to locate an item. In the case of a purchase you can compare prices and find the best deal.

Do multiple searches using keywords describing the item. When the item is located, all matches will be shown. Advertisement

[ Shred and Go ]
These items can be new or used, depending on preference.

To sell items, make sure photos are good quality and completely describe the item in detail. Be as honest and as thorough as possible because your buyers will rate your service and item at the end of their transaction.

Also, verify and check shipping costs prior to bidding or purchase. There’s nothing worse than paying more for shipping that the item itself.

When clicking on the item you are interested in, the "description" page will appear, giving all details and information on the item, current bid and time left to bid.

This section also provides the seller information and seller feedback score. The higher the feedback score means a high number of successful transactions.

If you have questions about the item, click "Ask seller a question," which allows you to directly e-mail the seller.

Shipping, payment details and return policy follows this section.

There are several ways to purchase items; members can either submit bids or use the "Buy it Now" feature.

All bids are binding contracts. Items with "Buy it Now" can be purchased for the seller’s fixed price. This option is not available as soon as the first bid is placed unless there is a reserve (a seller’s minimum price) that hasn’t been met.

If you are the winner of the bid you will receive a notification that will state, "Congrats, you just bought this item."

Notification and checkout through PayPal completes your eBay purchase.

The last step is to leave feedback on your sale or purchase so other members will have an accurate account of your dealings with the seller (or buyer).

My nephew buys PlayStation2, PlayStation3 and Xbox games on a regular basis for less than half the retail price. When he is done with them he takes them into GameStop and gets credit toward another game. Sometimes the credit is more than what he paid for the game.

A friend of mine periodically goes through her children’s toys, books and clothes. She looks up similar items and determines a price. Included in her price is shipping, which can be calculated by using the shipping chart.

She usually makes back around 50 percent of the money she spent buying the items – considerably more than selling them at a garage sale.

eBay also has eBay motors, where vehicles, boats, parts and accessories can be purchased.

eBay express offers fixed-price items from merchants and eBay stores feature retail merchandisers offering discounted shipping, specials and large selection of items.

Have fun buying and selling on eBay!

You have no idea, you need to read Ebays own discussion forums or the net to find out what is really happening at the moment. It is certainly NOT the glowing picture that you have painted with your 1 single first purchase of a car! Your article just proves how naive new ebayers are who are just discovering ebay post 24th Sept after the ship has already started sinking! The share price is now below 20 for the first time in more than 5 years!! Wakey wakey!!

If you really want to know how Ebay works...go to Ebay Message boards, then FEEDBACK on the left side of screen. You will soon realize that Ebay has shot themselves in the foot and has sabotaged the fine company that it once was. It is no linger a fun or safe place to trade business. the Ebay as we knew it last year is no longer the same. Very sad, but they did it to themselves with the ignorant changes they have made! Corporate SUICIDE!

It is true, Ebay has been an exciting place to buy and sell for me through the last six years. However, if any of you are thinking about signing up, I would encourage you to visit Ebay's own discussion boards to get a feel for what is transpiring in the Ebay "community" as of late. You may read many of the negative comments and choose to proceed with your decision to do business there, and that will be fine as long as you know what to expect from buyers/sellers, Paypal, and Ebay itself. The rules have changed drastically since May of this year, and folks that have been around awhile complain that the changes have had huge negative effects on their ability to safely trade, particularly if you are selling something. Please be careful if you are selling, as the cards are overwhelmingly stacked in the buyer's favor on Ebay! This is not conjecture, this is fact. I am sure that I am not the first to try to warn the uninitiated on message boards about the dangers of Ebay, so I will not delve into specific examples that have brought me to this conclusion, but please just know that if you see smoke there is very often fire under it somewhere. Do not assume that you will not be burned if you choose to sell on Ebay. Ebay is nothing like it was when I started, and that being the case, I have elected to stop doing business there. Again, I won't go into personal details other than to tell you that I have had very negative experiences directly attributable to Ebay's policy changes towards sellers, most all since May of this year. That warning issued, feel free to buy at Ebay all you want...buyers are basically bulletproof and can do no wrong there now.

You forgot to mention that this Company has extremely poor customer service, a disdain for its own customer the seller many of who are competely dissatisfied with it and have either been forced to leave Ebay or have left in disgust at the treatment that this disruptive and unstable platform has handed out to small sellers.

For a seller Paypal is not free, any monies in a paypal account are not protected by any financial authority. Paypal is owned by Ebay and in reality a seller is charged twice on a transaction.

If you want to learn the pitfalls of selling with Ebay or sell on line perhaps a view of Power Sellers United will reveal a list of alternative 'fair' and low cost sites to do this from.

As a LARGE volume Powerseller ILUVMYGTO, Ebay WAS a great place before to do business with. It since has changed with their new CEO, and has become a place I would NOT recommend. Between the increased fees, feedback system, DSR changes, MANDATORY PayPal going into place on October 15th, poor service and suspensions that are unwarranted, I would buy and sell elsewhere.

I am an ebay power seller who makes my full time living on ebay and I would not recommend to my adult children to try selling on ebay.

Read ebay's own discussion groups to get a feel for ebay has done and continues to do TO sellers, not FOR them.

This article looks like something written years ago when ebay was easy for work at home moms and others to make a little extra money on. It needs a reality check.

Yes eBay has certainly gone through some changes; many I feel not for the better for sure, but like anything else change in inevitable. You must learn to adapt and look for opportunity with every turn. It can still be a great place to sell off unwanted items around your house and if that is all your looking to do it can still be fun for sure.

However if you are looking to make a steady stream of income from eBay the opportunity is still there you just have to dig a little deeper and be a little more inventive.

The first thing you must do is dismiss the notion that Ebay is a one stop shop for making an income online. Ebay is a means to an end, NOT the destination. You must learn how to use Ebay to work for you, not the other way around.

Ebay has well over 60 million searches a day and the majority of people who are searching on Ebay are ready to buy. This makes Ebay a more attractive place to find buyers to an Internet Marketer then even Google.

If you look at Ebay and all you see is I buy something on wholesale for $20.00 then sell it on Ebay for $40.00, pay $5.00 in fees and be happy netting $15.00 in the transaction then yes you are going to have a tough hoe at making a living doing that.

There are some very tried and true real strategies that can be, and are being done by thousands of people everyday on Ebay such as:

1. Making money off eBay with out selling a thing.

2. Using eBay to generate traffic and leads for your own website or even an “offline” business.

3. Build a mailing list of people you can sell products to (either your own or someone else’s) off Ebay.

These are all things that can be done on Ebay legally, ethically, and well within the Ebay rules. You just have to think outside the box a little bit.

For anyone interested I will be speaking on the subject of Basic Buying and Selling on Ebay at the Fallbrook Public Library on the evening of November 5th. Admission is free. Not sure how much I would be able to get into these strategies I spoke about here but if the interest is there I would love to come back and talk about this also. Just let the Library know that you would like to hear more about this.

" This article looks like something written years ago when ebay was easy for work at home moms and others to make a little extra money on. It needs a reality check. "

Exactly!

Unless you are from China & have billions of mass produced cheap junk or are a huge "big lots" seller who pays NO fees, then run... run fast!

If you are a buyer who doesn't have a .99 store in your area, then Ebay would be perfect for you!

If you are a fraudulent buyer, then both Ebay & Paypal are your best friend. Nowhere on earth, can you get so much free stuff!

Having voiced my opinion, I'll close this with the following comments on this OP.

Allow me to punch a few holes in your story...

First of all, Ebay express has been trashed for some time now. Core auctions will soon follow! The mom & pop sellers that made Ebay, are becoming extinct, unwanted & driven out of JD's "new" Ebay.

We are "just noise" & fleamarket trash!

Speaking of fleamarkets. With all the China carp on the site, it "is" looking more & more, like a real fleamarket every day...

Like Ebay Wal-Mart R Us!

And your comment on shipping!
RE: Also, verify and check shipping costs prior to bidding or purchase. There’s nothing worse than paying more for shipping that the item itself.

Are you kidding? Shipping has nothing to do with the cost of the item!

As you stated "an abundance of great deals just waiting to be found"

So what you "are" saying is... if I buy an item for 1.00, I should not pay more then .75 for shipping?

Get Real!!!!

I've seen some carpy advice, but this has got to be the worse advice I have ever subjected my eyes to. I can't even wrap this around my brain & BTW, this is coming from a 10 year Ebay seller with only 2 lifetime negatives! And 10 years of buying, as well..

I also find it hard to believe you would purchase an antique car, have it delivered on a car carrier & praising how much it was "as described" Who does that? And how much was the shipping on that, I wonder!

You obviously live in a Pipe Dream. I think it's time to wake up!

JMO...

What you have said is history now. Ebay is no longer a good place for selling online. Look at ebay's own message board, you will figure it out. I used to be a powerseller, now I don't sell on ebay any more. Why? 1: ebay charges too much; 2: ebay give buyers too much power, one dishonest buyer will turn you down.

I found ebay's stock is down, who caused all this? it's ebay! bye bye ebay!

Stay away from ebay, use ebid.net instead for a great buying or selling experience. Thousands of ex ebay users are doing the same.
