Swing West in concert Feb. 16

Thursday, February 7th, 2008
Issue 06, Volume 12.

Swing West, an acoustic trio doing vintage and western swing, will be playing Saturday, February 16, at 7:30 p.m. at the Fallbrook Woman’s Club, 238 West Mission (corner of East Mission and South Mission).

David Dekker on lead guitar and vocals, Bruce Huntington on bass and Bob Sandstrom on violin comprise Swing West.

They say "violin" rather than "fiddle" because Sandstrom does the sweeping credenzas, amazing arpeggios and impossible fingerwork of classic styles all tastefully wrapped in and around the work of the trio as a whole for a unique and very nice effect.

His formal violin studies opened the doors for performance with various symphonic and chamber groups, theater productions and private and public venues.

Dekker has been playing and singing professionally since 1970 as a soloist and Advertisement

member of several groups.

Huntington received training in violin and piano from an early age.

When his older brother needed a bass player for his teen rock band, Huntington took up the bass. He toured before settling in Las Vegas, where he played showrooms, lounges and clubs.

The three only recently discovered they make fine music as a trio and share a love of swing, a style of jazz popular in the 1930s with a smoother rhythm and less complex chord structure than Dixieland.

Juan Duprey and Soneros del Caribe will be coming March 15 and bluegrass with The Brombies will perform on April 19 (note date change).

Tickets are on sale at Major Market and the door. Call (760) 723-7255 for more information.

Wheelchair entrance at the Woman’s Club is on North Mission.
